UPDATE: East Meadow Man Arrested in Hit-and-Run Death

The defendant turned himself over to police Saturday evening.

Update: July 23, 11:10 a.m.

The Nassau County Police homicide squad has identified the victims of the above accident as Abrahan Soriano, 37, who suffered fatal injuries. The second victim has been identified as Ramon Santos Cabrera, 49, who is still alive. The investigation has determined that the victims are not related, police said.

An East Meadow man turned himself over to police Saturday evening after allegedly being involved in a hit-and-run accident in Uniondale earlier Saturday that left one man dead.

According to Nassau County detectives, around 12:38 a.m. Saturday, two brothers, ages 36 and 49, were attempting to cross Jerusalem Avenue at Leonard Avenue in Uniondale. As they were crossing southbound, they were struck by an eastbound maroon colored compact car, which fled the scene eastbound on Jerusalem Avenue. 

The 36-year-old victim was transported by county ambulance to an area hospital where he was pronounced deceased at 1:17 a.m. by hospital staff, police said.

The 49-year-old was also transported by county ambulance to an area hospital where he is currently listed in stable condition, being treated for a head injury, police said.

Detectives reported that Jose E. Sorto, 48, of East Meadow, surrendered himself to the Third Squad in Williston Park on Saturday at 7 p.m. in connection with the hit-and-run. He is currently charged with two counts of leaving the scene of an incident and will be arraigned on Sunday at First District Court in Hempstead.

Identification of the deceased is being withheld pending family notification.
