EM Firefighter Injured While Battling Nearby House Fire

Seven departments helped extinguish a house fire that erupted in North Merrick Tuesday.

An East Meadow firefighter suffered head and neck burns as he helped extinguish a house fire on Sutton Place in North Merrick Tuesday.

"Part of the roof collapsed on his head while he was inside fighting the fire," North Merrick Chief James Rogers said.

The firefighter, who has not been identified, was treated at a nearby hospital and released.

According to Nassau County Arson/Bomb Squad detectives, roofers were doing work on the residence when they noticed the home lost power. As they notified the homeowner, who was asleep inside, they observed smoke coming from the home. They awoke the female homeowner, 73, who then safely exited the home, police said.

Seventy-five firefighters responded with 11 apparatus to battle the blaze, which erupted at around 3:15 p.m. Fire departments from Merrick, East Meadow, Freeport, Roosevelt, Bellmore and North Bellmore were all on the scene.

The house sustained extensive damage.

The cause of the fire is still being investigated but has been deemed non-suspicious at this time.
