Correction Officer Assaulted by Inmate at NUMC

A prisoner threw the contents of his bed pan at the officer who was assigned to supervise him.

A correction officer that works at the in East Meadow was assaulted by an inmate while he was being temporarily housed at (NUMC) on March 13.

According to a release from the Nassau County Sheriff Officers Association, Ali Martin, 28, of Queens, threw the contents of his bed pan, which included blood, mucus and vomit on the officer assigned to supervise him. The contents struck the officer on his back and arm. Martin attempted to get out of his bed and continue the assault, but the officer and medical staff restrained him.

The officer was later treated at Winthrop University Hospital for exposure to body fluids and injuries to his back and right ring finger and released.

“Nassau County’s correction officers face danger on a regular basis and are frequently exposed to health hazards," said John Jaroncyzk, the president of the Nassau County Sheriff Officers Association. "This incident highlights just one of the many challenges our union members face each and every day while performing their duties and protecting the taxpayers of Nassau County. Events like this also stress the importance that inmates who assault officers in any way must be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law." 

An investigation into this incident by the Sheriff’s Department is underway.  Martin could face charges of aggravated harassment for throwing blood at the officer and second-degree assault. If he is found guilty of these charges, Martin could be sentenced up to seven years in prison.
