The Perfect Cocktail: Pumpkin Flavors

It's time for pumpkins, even in your favorite cocktail.

The fall weather has arrived and you know what that means? Pumpkins.

Pumpkins are everywhere during the autumn months. Whether you love Starbucks pumpkin spice lattes, pumpkin bread or pumpkin pie, this is the time of year for that signature spiced flavor.

One pumpkin trend that has taken off is the pumpkin cocktail. Whatever your favorite drink is, there is likely a pumpkin version of it.

The key ingredient in most pumpkin cocktails is a pumpkin flavored liqueur. Are you a martini lover? Try a Pumpkin Martini made with Hiram Walker pumpkin spice liqueur.

Have your shaker ready along with one and one-half ounces of pumpkin liqueur, one and a half ounces of spiced rum (like Captain Morgan) and one tablespoon of half and half. (Keep in mind that the alcohol measurements are in fluid ounces, and can be measured by the jigger – three jiggers equals one and one-half half fluid ounces.) Combine all of the ingredients in a shaker filled with ice, shake and strain into a chilled martini glass.

If you think margaritas mean limes and Mexican food, think again. Try a Pumpkin margarita made with Bols Pumpkin smash liqueur. For this drink you will need two ounces of tequila, one and one-half ounces of Bols Pumpkin Smash liqueur, one and a half ounces of triple sec and two cups of ice. Pour all of the ingredients into a blender with the ice and blend until smooth. Be sure to serve the drinks right away so they don’t melt.

Remember, you do not have to use the brand name liqueurs suggested in the recipes. Simply go to your local liquor, such as or , and ask what pumpkin liqueurs they have or recommend.

A great garnish for pumpkin cocktails is cinnamon sugar. Before pouring the drinks into glasses, simply moisten the rims with some water and then dip them into a bowl of cinnamon sugar. This little trick adds an extra something to every sip of your pumpkin cocktail.

The sun may still be up into the late evening, but autumn is creeping up on us. This is the time to prepare for your seasonal get-togethers – be ready with a delicious pumpkin cocktail.
