Patch Question: Which Businesses Should Fill Meadow Crossing?

The former Exxon location is slotted to become a new shopping center.

In December of 2011, Patch that a new group of stores are slated to be built at the space formerly belonging to Exxon at the intersection of Newbridge Road and Hempstead Turnpike.

Located at 2464 Hempstead Turnpike, the “Meadow Crossing” will supposedly include several storefronts that are divisible up to 4,200 square feet, according to a sign currently on the property. Units at the new development are to be leased by In Line Realty. The Exxon station that was operating on the site closed up shop.

While the tanks have been removed from the property, the canopy from the gas station remains, and progress hasn't been made for quite some time. This leads to today's Patch Question.

What businesses would you like to see occupy the new shopping center? Tell us in the comments.

people resort to becomming the spelling or grammer police when there is nothing intelligent left for them to say
Brent M. April 02, 2012 at 02:01 AM
I know we had one that closed.. but what about some sort of Yogurt place.. like RED MANGO to fill one store... just saying between the 3 stores in Meadow Crossing and the 5 in Meadow Commons... can't one be a Frozen Yogurt ??? Or what about a Nitro.. or a Turkish Food place... or maybe a good ole fashion Deli.. just brainstorming.. just words
Susan April 02, 2012 at 02:08 AM
Red Mango! I've heard great things about Red Mango but have never been there. Have you? I think they opened one recently in Jericho. Forzen yogurt is good too. The possibilities are endless. Those stores (and the ones on EM Aveune) could wind up being just about anything. We'll just have to wait and see. I just hope they don't sit empty.

I would like to apologize for my behavior reguarding susan. am however the second one she has attacked on this forum. I guess she doesn't think that every thing every one says has merit but it does all these problems will occur and it will make people annoyed. It is a quality of life problem. i am talking about the new strip mall they put up on East Meadow avenue just to be clear, But agian i do apologize.
Katherine Trunk April 02, 2012 at 04:07 AM
I agree Bill. Perhaps a new store with different management could make a go of it. Still would love to see an art store. Maybe art studio? Music supply store? Pet food store could be a small shop to fit the space. Solar panel sales company is an interesting thought, as well.
Susan April 02, 2012 at 04:49 AM
For the record, I did not attack anyone. I did not use anyone's name in any derogatory comment at all. I would never stoop so low as to call people names, unlike a certain person did when ATTACKING me!!! To add isult to injury, I then get asked to take a quiz about East Meadow like I had to prove something!! Unreal! Then words were put into my mouth about my spending time in Merrick and Bellmore which by the way, I NEVER ever said. I was clearly talking about the AVENUES with those names, not the towns. Some people can't write a cohesive paragraph or read carefully and that becomes my problem how??? This column was about possible future stores on HEMPSTEAD TPKE (Meadow Crossing) and NOT the stores on East Meadow Avenue (Meadow Commons). I think that is half the issue here. Some people are writing about apples and others are writing about oranges. Arguments ensue when points are not clearly made. When people start talking about traffic and garbage after everything that happened with Sonic, it just infused me. Why everyone in this town thinks they have a say in these decisions is beyond me. Leave the renting of commercial property to those who know better. Sure we can talk about what stores we'd like to have open here. We can all dream! Keep in mind, it used to be a gas station so size matters!. The important thing is that these new stores stay rented. The last thing East Meadow needs is more empty stores and I think we can ALL agree on that.
marianne krause April 02, 2012 at 05:13 AM
my apology stands as is and this particular patch is not about the sonic its about the meadow crossing on hempstead turnpike. And everyone in east meadow should have the same say as you think you do . we live here and its about time more people got inolved with these matters as it relates to all of us in one way or another. Traffic safety is a huge issue concerning hempstead turnpike always has been and always will be even more so with that new merge they decided was a good idea taking newbridge rd from 4 lanes to 2 thats going to impact everything with a new strip mall on that corner.
Susan April 02, 2012 at 05:47 AM
I couldn't care less about your apology. You need to make up your mind. First you say you're talking about East Meadow Avenue and now you say you're talking about Hempstead Tpke. Which is it?? Like I said, apples and oranges and comments that make no sense. This was the comment YOU made in your previous post, "i am talking about the new strip mall they put up on East Meadow avenue just to be clear, " And now you're talking about traffic Hempstead Tpke and Newbridge Rd. Your comments are like watching a tennis match, only you are volleying with yourself. Thank you for proving my point.
Christine April 02, 2012 at 12:32 PM
Mike is this over yet!!!!!! This is becoming a tennis match with no winners... They need to get back to the question...

Folks, with all that is going on in the world and the problems we face as a nation, I wish you would all calm down and be nice to one another. We are all fellow neighbors that I am sure want the best for East Meadow. I have lived here all my 64 years and my family originated from "The Meadow'" in the 1800's. I have been very involved in my community through the years and love this town very much. I am sure you are all wonderful people, so please show some lrespect for each other. God bless.... Woody
Susan April 02, 2012 at 01:58 PM
I guess I do owe my fellow Patch readers an apology for letting things get out of hand. I never should have responded to that attack. I tried hard not to but when someone is calling you names when they are clearly not true, it's hard not to react. I tried to delete the comments but for reasons unbeknownst to me, they won't delete. I've has this issue before with the Patch and the tech crew couldn't find the problem. Christine is totally right though. Everyone needs to stay on topic. And as I stated, that was the issue here. People are getting mixed up between Meadow CROSSING and Meadow COMMONS. Have a good day.
Susan April 02, 2012 at 02:11 PM
By the way, there is some good news. We're going to have one less empty store in East Meadow. This morning I noticed that the former site of Dempsey's has been rented and a new Japanese restaurant is "coming soon".
Frank T April 02, 2012 at 02:37 PM
Thank you Mr Wood for putting this in the proper perspective.
Bill Alderman April 02, 2012 at 04:05 PM
Ding - Ding - Ding ???? That is the end of round 5?? WOW Paulie went from sparring partner to referree ...will wonders never cease? Dempsey's will be a Japanese Terryaki Express, there is a new Travel Agency on Merrick Ave and SafeLite Auto Glass is looking at locations in our area for an office. And I for one would like to see a Bass Pro Shop or Furniture Outlet or Claim Jumper/Cracker Barrel Restaurant in the Old Blockbuster spot.
Susan April 02, 2012 at 04:20 PM
If I'm not mistaken, that new travel agency is sharing space within Venturi Hair Salon so it has not rented an empty space. Too bad about that. Funny about SafeLite Auto Glass. I think they used to be where Dunkin Donuts is on Merrick Avenue and Front St. Aren't all the Cracker Barrel's free standing restaurants?? The ones I've seen have been but I certainly haven't seen them all. Is that space is big enough for the typical Cracker Barrel? IHOP could fit there though. I hadn't thought about a restaurant for that spot. It's a good idea. But like everything else, I guess if there was an interest in the space, it would have been rented already.
Cookie April 02, 2012 at 04:51 PM
Wow! okay yes, Dempsey's is is located in the lot right by the Panera Bread store. right? I forgot about this spot. Susan, yes a nice IHOP would be nice in that spot. parking lot is nice size for parking. The reason I keep mentioning IHOP is because it is truly family oriented. They have been open since 1958 and have over 1500 locations currently open. They participate with the local community with various charities. They are well know for the toy for tot's, helping the children's hospital and much more. I truly believe in the gift of giving! And in this crazy economic down fall............why not have a place that get's the community involved in the positive and wonderful things to help each other.
Susan April 02, 2012 at 05:11 PM
Cookie, actually Bill and I were talking about the former Blockbuster spot on Front St. Oy, sorry, I went off topic .. lol. Dempsey's was next to Moe's by Texas Roadhouse. Yes, right near Panera. I agree with you. I think an IHOP is a great idea for this area. I didn't realize that they were so charity oriented. That's wonderful. There isn't even one close to us in East Meadow. Cracker Barrel would be good somewhere too but I think they only do free-standing restaurants. I'm pretty sure if all of us very persuasive people approached any new larger business that should open, we could convince them to get involved in community activities too. Now if we only had a way to contact these chains and make these location suggestions. Internet? You never know, it might just work. :)
Frank T April 02, 2012 at 05:34 PM
Cracker Barrel would be great to have but LI is not even on their radar. I contacted Cracker Barrel a couple of times and they had no interest in a LI location. Do you remember the Sears Furniture Outlet where Uncle Guiseppes is? I actually bought a coffee table there 20 years ago.
Cookie April 02, 2012 at 05:49 PM
oh yes, so sorry. The blockbuster spot on front street is a big store with a nice amount of square feet for a nice restaurant even a Bed Bath & Beyond. The closest one to us is in Westbury. Well, all I can say is that I enjoy living in East Meadow. I did not grow up here but have met a lot of wonderful people. Susan, to make a difference in your town, you would truly have to get involved with the community leaders and of course the RIGHT connections. Lol! I guess I would start with the town meetings and people who run them. The East Meadow Chamber of Commerce, Assemblyman Tom Mckevitt, Mr. Gary Hudes, Norma Gonsalves. Reach council members at 489-5000. Our children's future depends on ALL of us working together for a better community. I will try to get back to you in contacting some of these chains.
Susan April 02, 2012 at 08:24 PM
I already am very involved in the community. Sometimes more than I'd even like to be! :)
Cookie April 02, 2012 at 09:48 PM
Susan, that is a good thing. At least you care. You are a true trooper! : )
Susan April 02, 2012 at 10:40 PM
Cookie, you are too kind. Thank you. There were plenty of words you could have used. "Trooper" was one that didn't come to mind at all.LOL. (I wish we had a way to email each other without it being part of the comments).
Cookie April 03, 2012 at 12:33 AM
Your very welcome Susan. I just tend to admire people for actually caring and stepping up to the plate on certain things in life. And we can't always make everyone happy. We will not always see eye to eye and agree on everything. But, respect and kindness is a huge thing for me. I always wish people the best! I encourage people to care and strive for there goals and dreams in life. So, given that I hope that some really nice SHOP's open up at the new rental store fronts. But, on the realistic side of me..........I don't like when they charge the poor "OWNERS" those huge rental/lease agreements depending on what your selling and opening up. At the end of the day I know it's just Politics and the way of the world. Have a wonderful week. Shoot for the star's! Oh and pray that our GASOLINE prices don't continue to go up. Lately I shop around for the BETTER prices........Lol!
Christine April 03, 2012 at 12:34 AM
How about a dog groomer since it will be next to a vet...
Susan April 03, 2012 at 12:39 AM
Actually it's you who should be admired. What a great outlook on life!
Cookie April 03, 2012 at 03:16 AM
Thank you Susan. And yes, I saw the above comments. But, hey you both had something to say. You said it. It's done........an apology was stated and we move on. No one is perfect. We are all HUMAN and make big and little mistakes. So, I get it in the end. Plus, who the heck am I to judge anyone on this earth. Lol! Ooops off topic again.... sorry A dog groomer sounds really nice with maybe some training and doggy sitting! I would be there first customer. : )
Catherine Mary April 03, 2012 at 01:02 PM
The vet offers dog grooming so I can't imagine he would appreciate the competition. As a "dog person" I would be hesitant to take my dog to a groomer or trainer in such a busy traffic area. God forbid a dog gets loose going in or out of a car. It would have a very poor chance of not getting killed by a car speeding down Hempstead Tpke or Newbridge Rd. Just my opinion. I am sure a lot of people would not be concerned about that, or consider it until it was too late.
Cathy April 03, 2012 at 03:10 PM
Jan's ice cream would be nice....or something like that
Cathy April 03, 2012 at 03:23 PM
I live on Newbridge Road ... not near any stores, businesses or office building and we ALWAYS find garbage on our front lawn. So it doesn't really matter if people are parking near stores they are throwing their garbage out the car windows and it is flying everywhere! We need to get past the garbage issue and open up some business there to help the economy!!!
Cathy April 03, 2012 at 06:30 PM
I like this idea!
