Hundreds Attend Funeral for East Meadow Firefighter

Hundreds attended a funeral Friday for long time East Meadow firefighter Nelson H. Finkelman, who died Oct. 2 at the age of 83.

Services were held at East Meadow Fire Department Headquarters Friday morning. Rabbi Mark Greenspan officiated. Mr. Finkelman will be buried at Mt. Golda Cemetery in Huntington Station.

Mr. Finkelman, a Nassau County fire marshal, was a 56-year member of Ladder Company 2. He also served his country in the United States Navy.

"He served in ways too numerous to list, but will be remembered most for his dedicated service as one of the first Firecom operators, as a Nassau County fire marshal supervisor, a chief instructor at the Nassau County Fire Service Academy and proud member of the East Meadow Fire Department. To say he will be missed is an understatement. We thank you Nelson for your service, and for your unending friendship," a message on the Nassau County Fire Marshal's Facebook page read.

Town of Hempstead Supervisor Kate Murray and Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano were among those who offered condolences to Mr. Finkelman's wife, Gloria, and their four children.
