Former East Meadow Music Teacher Dies at 91

Helen A. Hilger passed away peacefully in Charlotte on June 21.

Helen A. Hilger, who used to teach music in the East Meadow School District, died peacefully in Charlotte on Thursday at 91, according to the Charlotte Observer.

Hilger married Tom Vernon Hilger, who served in the Navy, in 1946. They were married for 57 years before he died in 2003.

Hilger, who was born in Queens, went to the Juliard School of Music and got her Bacherlor of Arts in Voice. She then got her Master's Degree in Music Education and ventured to East Meadow.

She loved sharing her passion for music with children and engaging young students in chorus performances. Helen also maintained her love for performing, appearing as a soprano soloist and in quartets throughout the region.

Hilger is survived by her daughter Helene Hilger, son in law, Arnie Cann, daughter, Susan Hilger and Tim Minkkinen, and by two grandsons, Adam Cann and Michael Cann.
