Neighbor's Death Inspires East Meadow Eagle Scout

Christopher Sommella helps combat the mosquito population at Veterans Memorial Park.

East Meadow Eagle Scout Christopher Joseph Sommella, a member of Troop 157, was recently honored at a court of honor held recently at Calvary Lutheran Church.

Presiding Officer Legis. Norma Gonsalves (R-East Meadow) presented Sommella with a citation in recognition of his hard work.

To attain the rank of Eagle Scout, Sommella, along with fellow troop members and local volunteers, constructed five bat houses and installed them in Veterans Memorial Park in East Meadow.

After losing a neighbor a few years ago to West Nile Virus, Sommella constructed the bat houses to help combat the mosquito population at the community park and pool.

“Christopher’s loss inspired him to help prevent any future tragedies in any way he could,” Gonsalves said. “His project is certainly a great way to increase the safety of residents using this park from being exposed to West Nile Virus and other mosquito-related illnesses. He serves as a great role model for future scouts.”
