Millie Jones Recognized For Her 'Generous Spirit'

During an afternoon ceremony at Farmingdale Public Library Saturday, East Meadow's Millie Jones was among 10 women to receive Assemblyman Tom McKevitt's "Woman of Distinction" award.

McKevitt holds the ceremony each year to recognize women throughout his 17th district that have "demonstrated an exceptional impact on their communities and the lives of others through their commitment service."

Always willing to help her community in some way, Jones volunteers for numerous East Meadow organizations, including the East Meadow Chamber of Commerce, most recently serving as its president in 2012. She has also served on the Culinary Delights, Casino Night and Chamber Networking Committees.

Jones is also active with East Meadow United Methodist Church, serving on the Outreach Committee, Nursery School Governing Board and EMUMC Players Theatre Group. She is involved with a community program that supplies teddy bears to less fortunate children and seniors through the church's Outreach Program and Sunday School. During the holiday season, she volunteers her time at the Nassau University Medical Center holiday party for the children’s unit.

Jones is also an active member of the East Meadow Kiwanis and East Meadow Sons of Italy.

Professionally, she serves as assistant branch manager of The First National Bank of Long Island in East Meadow. She lives in town with her husband, Dave, and two children, Cassandra and Matthew.

"The women that we honor today represent some of the most accomplished and selfless individuals in our state and our nation," McKevitt said. "Our communities are the wonderful, welcoming places they are due to the warmth and generous spirit displayed by our honorees. We are very lucky to have these women as our friends and neighbors."

McKevitt further thanked the honorees' families, who have "allowed their loved ones to spend so much time caring for others."

In addition to Jones, 2013 Women of Distinction honorees include Deborah Canova of North Massapequa; Louise Cassano of Levittown; Tina Diamond of Farmingdale; Jessica Koenig of Levittown; Laurie May of Westbury; Carol Muscarella of Massapequa; Laurie Rozakis, Ph.D., of Farmingdale; Margaret Santer of Levittown; and Barbara Sherwin of South Farmingdale.

Women are selected based on their accomplishments in the fields of business, community and civic affairs, education, government, health care, humanitarianism and military service.

The East Meadow Chamber of Commerce nominated Jones.
