Girl Scouts' Lemonade Stand Raises $200

Funds raised will go towards the construction of a rain garden at Parkway Elementary School.

East Meadow Girl Scouts raised $200 at a weekend lemonade stand to help them raise funds for the construction of a rain garden at Parkway Elementary School.

The stand was held Saturday at A Taste of Home Bakery in N. Bellmore.

Amanda Skoros has been leading the girls in Troop 1169 since kindergarten. "The girls were extremely successful," she said. "There were so many very generous people that came out to support them."

Skoros praised the bakery's owners, Rose and Monica, touting the women as "very community-minded people."

"They gave us tables and chairs to use, gave us ice and even brought out a big bag of cookies for the girls to eat," she said.

There are six girls in the troop: Shannon Floody, Ryan Skoros, Megan Sohl, Gabriela Cunha, Shannon Pepe and Kelly Trebendis, all age 10 and entering fifth grade at Parkway Elementary School.

The scouts are building the garden to earn their Bronze Award, the highest honor a Girl Scout Junior (fourth and fifth grades) can achieve.

Construction of the rain garden is slated for early spring. During the winter, the troop hopes to find a nursery to help the girls purchase plants. The girls will also decide on a layout and design for the garden.
