Whatever Happened to Making Your Own Costume?
I went to a party goods store the other day with my granddaughter, to buy her a Halloween costume. I was delighted. I remember costumes in cardboard boxes, with see through cellophane windows on top. As much as my kids may have wanted to buy a costume, they knew what fun was awaiting them at home..when they would MAKE their own costumes!! I would make them into angels, using an old sheet, white oaktag wings with string, and pipe cleaners wrapped with gold foil paper! I would make them into cowboys, by buying them a straw hat with a draw string, letting them wear my bandana around their neck, their jeans and even made them sheriff..by cutting out a star and then wrapping it in aluminum foil from the kitchen cabinet. Little devils were easy..just their red turtle neck, a yard of red fabric from Joanne's, their winter black boots, and daddy's rendition of a pitchfork! They have been hobos, gypsies, clowns, soldiers, and my favorite flappers from the Roaring Twenties. (An old pillowcase, some frill from Pearl Art, hot glue gun ironed it on, and a colorful feather attached to their elastic sequence headband. Total cost..possibly 6 dollars). Back to my granddaughter's visit to Party City. "What do you want to be for Halloween, sweetie?" "I want to be a purple butterfly." We went in and searched for a purple butterfly but all we found were wings ($14.95), little cute dresses ($12.95), butterfly antennae ($9.95) and if you wanted anything else..that would be additional money..grandma!!! What happened to the all in one costumes? Nothing. They were there alright! Ranging from $30 to $60, you could be anything you wanted from Transformer, and Skylander to Lady Gaga, or Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz! Some costumes, require wigs; of course! Some costumes are not complete unless you have a wand; naturally! Some costumes NEED make-up! What? Use your mom's old lipstick! What do you mean you NEED purple nails? The genius who made the first costume for sale, (to make a mom's life easier) actually did something really bad. He/she took away precious "share time" from a parent who excites in the idea of helping their child make a great costume with stuff that can be found around the house. Truly, buying a costume at a party-goods store gives you the array of choices, but DOLLARS LATER, it leaves you feeling nothing. Peace.
