Getting Your Driver's License in NY

Getting a driver’s license is an exciting point in one's life. Here is what you need today in NY to do it.

Are you about to get your driver’s license? Do you know somebody who is a soon to be driver? Here is everything you need to know about what it takes to get your license in NY.

Getting a drivers license is a huge part of someone’s life. Whether they are a teenager crossing that threshold and getting closer to adulthood or just someone who is starting to drive later in life, it is a great privilege that truly is life changing.

Before you can just jump in a car and take off, you need to follow the proper steps and procedures. Steps 1-4 must be adhered to by anybody under the age of 18. The only step that applies to adults 18 and over is step 4. Here is what you should know:

  1. Take/pass written test at the DMV to obtain your learners permit if you are under 18 years old. This will allow you to practice driving with a licensed driver who is over the age of 21. However, the day of your test you must also pass an eye exam, provide 6 points of identification including a social security card, and pay all fees to take the exam.
  2. Practice driving. The DMV states that you must have 50 hours behind the wheel of a car while being supervised by a parent or guardian before you can schedule a road test.
  3. Take the 5 hour pre-licensing course.  In New York the 5 hour pre-licensing course is mandatory for those wanting to take a road test. A certificate must be provided to the driving instructor the day of your road test. It is a very informative class with useful knowledge that will come in handy on the road. For a limited time the pre-licensing course is available for 30 percent off at https://www.wheelsneeddeals.com/deal/all-county-driving---hicksville,-ny-and-massapequa,-ny/54/ . Classes can be taken in Hicksville or Massapequa.
  4. Schedule your road test. The day of your test make sure you have your learner permit and your Student Certificate of Completion or your five-hour pre-licensing course completion certificate. Use all of the fundamentals that you learned in the classroom and behind the wheel to ace your test!

Getting a drivers license is one of the most exciting points in a person’s life as well as a huge responsibility.  Make sure you follow these steps and make sure you are prepared.  Good luck and drive safe!
