Town Honors East Meadow Man for Making A Difference

Andrew Alderman's volunteer efforts date back to elementary school when he began raising money for his mom's friend who had lupus.

Andrew Alderman of East Meadow was among 12 Long Islanders the Town of Hempstead recognized during its 17th annual "Make A Difference" awards ceremony Nov. 12.

Alderman's volunteer efforts date back to elementary school when he began raising money for his mom's friend who had lupus. To date, he's raised thousands of dollars toward finding a cure for the disease and participates in the Lupus Awareness Walk at Eisenhower Park every year.

“Every year we gather to honor the unsung heroes who strive to improve their communities and help their fellow citizens,” Hempstead Town supervisor Kate Murray said. “You will not find these people in the tabloids or on television. In fact, these honorees could be one of your neighbors, co-workers, or even a local landscaper with a green thumb and a heart of gold.”

Alderman expanded his fundraising efforts over the years, helping to raise money for and awareness of breast cancer, Downs Syndrome, Wounded Warriors, pancreatic cancer and autism.

Alderman recently teamed up with his dad, Bill, collecting and donating dresses and other items to local students so they could attend prom. He also gathered supplies and raised money for victims displaced by an apartment complex fire earlier this year.

The Town received hundreds of nominations for the award. Supervisor Murray said each honoree, recognized with a medal and certificate, had an inspiring story of courage, volunteerism and philanthropy.

"The heart-warming actions of our honorees will hopefully inspire all of us to earnestly try to make a real and meaningful difference in the world in which we live," Murray said.
