K-Kids, Builders Spend Day Learning to Serve Their Communities

The Long Island South Central Division of Kiwanis recently held a K-Kids/Builders Club mini-convention at W.T. Clarke Middle/High School.

The day-long event saw the three sitting New York District Governors joined by three Distinguished Past Governors, two District Administrators, several Lt. Governors, three Distinguished Past Lt. Governors and three District Chairs come together to motivate and inspire our youngest K-Family members.

The mini-convention hosted by the Bowling Green K-Kids and W.T. Clarke Builders Club began with speed learning rounds during which attendees rotated to seven-minute presentations about the four Kiwanis charities as well as the Governor's and First Lady's Projects. During these informal presentations the K-Kids and Builders saw videos, received information and giveaways and discussed how they can support each charity or project.

The speed learning rounds were followed by a special greeting by NYD Kiwanis Governor Joe Aiello.

Session 1 offered workshops for presidents/vice presidents, treasurers, secretaries, directors and chairs, members and advisors.

Following a snack break, Session 2 workshops included public speaking, Pushing Projects to the Next Level, goal setting, Finding a Community Need, K-Family and, awards and recognition.

After attendees returned to the general session room, they completed First Lady Cookie Aiello's Treats for the Troops project. The nearly 100 pounds of candy brought to the mini-convention by attendees was added to the several hundred pounds of candy collected by the Bowling Green K-Kids and WT Clarke Builders Club last weekend to yield nearly 500 treat bags for U.S. soldiers serving overseas. Each quart sized bag was filled with a variety of treats including Tic Tacs, Life Savers, chewing gum, hard candies, mints and a personal letter of thanks.

The mini-convention was concluded with a closing session at which Governor Joe Aiello issued a challenge to all the NY District's K-Kids and Builders Clubbers to create the best video highlighting the service of their clubs.

In addition, a trophy was awarded to the Meadowbrook K-Kids for bringing the most candy for the troops to the mini-convention.

Due to the generosity of LtG Ann, the LISC Division and Levittown's Bageltown, the mini-convention's registrations fees were not needed for the snacks and supplies. Attendees voted to donate over $200 to Kiwanis International's Eliminate Project.
