Girl Scouts Donate Artwork to NUMC Peds Unit

Cassandra Nikiel and Nichole Pupo create cartoon character drawings for pediatric patients.

Budding artists Cassandra Nikiel and Nichole Pupo, both Girl Scouts with Troop 1404 in East Meadow, donated 32 works of art to the pediatric unit at Nassau University Medical Center Thursday.

Nikiel and Pupo, 13 and 12 years old respectively, spent nearly 50 hours creating their framed cartoon characters because they wanted to put a smile on the faces of the kids staying in the pediatric ward.

The project will help the scouts earn their Silver Award, the highest award a Girl Scout Cadette can earn.

"They chose to do this project because they are both artists and they know how much kids love cartoon characters," Margaret Nikiel said.

The girls created 16 pictures each, keeping in mind cartoon character favorites that would appeal to both genders. Tweetie, Charlie Brown, Mickey Mouse, Phineas and Ferb, Sherrif Woody Pride from Toy Story, Nemo and friends and more will soon adorn every room in NUMC's pediatric unit.

Nikiel and Pupo presented their works of art to NUMC pediatric nurse manager Sue Novelli and activity specialist Heather Spanfelner.
