Would You Accept a Mets Player Who Was Gay?

How would you respond if that player was struggling or succeeding on the field?

Note: This article was written and submitted by Matthew Falkenbury and was originally printed on The Daily Stache.

There is nothing wrong, weird, or any other negative adjective you can think of, with being a homosexual.

It is a lifestyle that over the past 20 years has become more accepted in society, and yet still has roadblocks to it being fully accepted.

After the Super Bowl week, where 49ers cornerback Chris Culliver talked about how a gay teammate would not be welcomed in the locker room, I wondered how I or other Mets fans would react if a Mets player was openly gay.

How would you respond if that player was struggling or succeeding on the field? Would you be more cautious to heckle him if he was doing poorly? Would you not cheer him loudly for fear that rooting for a gay man would be looked on by others as a negative?

I guess, my question, beyond the scope of just the Mets and us fans, is would we be willing to accept and support a player on any of our favorite teams if he was openly gay.

At one point in his Hall of Fame career, Mike Piazza was rumored to have been a homosexual. In what is considered one of the strangest press conferences in Mets history, Piazza told the media he was not gay.

Mike Piazza is my all-time favorite player. He is the reason I became a Mets fan. If those rumors had been true, and he was gay, I would not care. What he does off the field is not my concern. I only cared about what he did every night for nine innings or more, trying to help the Mets win a ball game.

Of course, other fans did care and the New York Post most certainly cared as they tried to further the story as much as possible. The headline on the back page that was one of the most famous of them all is the picture you see in this article.

In 2013, the gay community has made so many strides to earn equality in our society. The legalization of gay marriage in many states, including New York, being just one part of the many issues the gay community has seen success on over the years.

Sports is something that has deep roots in being considered a “Mainly Man’s” activity. It is for the strongest of the strong, the most gifted of athletes competing for glory and the next opportunity to cash in when the time is right.

Whether it’s football, basketball, hockey or baseball, we have seen men and women perform to the best of their abilities each and every day to be the best they can be and be remembered for what they did on the playing field.

The sexual orientation that they choose or that they are born with, depending on which side of that argument you fall on, should not be any of our concern. It won’t affect how they perform, train, work at getting better at what they do and it shouldn’t affect their performance on the field, court, ice or diamond.

If the New York Mets had an openly gay player, he should be treated as any of the other players that have put on the uniform before him or after him.

I would accept him because the Mets organization has accepted him. I would cheer for him if he was doing well and boo him if he was doing poorly.

What he does off the field would not enter my mind for a second when it came to determining what he has done well or not well for the Mets.

But, I’m just one fan. The sense I get, and the reason I think that a player in any major U.S. sport has not come out as gay until after his career was over is because his fear of acceptance in our society.

Jackie Robinson took that step into the spotlight for African Americans, Billie Jean King took that step into the spotlight for Women. Will we ever see a current athlete in any of the four major sports do the same for gay men? I think one day we will.

At the end of the day, it should not matter if one of the 2013 or beyond players for the New York Mets was gay. But, sadly, it will matter. It will matter to many people and it will change the perception he has among fans in general.

It will matter but will you accept it if a current Mets player was openly gay? Tell us in the comments section below.

Until someone can explain how one's sex life impacts a sport, this is just another example of discrimination. Who one sleeps with has absolutely NO bearing on how hard they can throw or how far they can hit
John Gruber February 12, 2013 at 11:16 pm
actually it's not "propaganda", as recently as the superbowl players were saying how they would never play with a homosexual teammate, It's a big deal because most athletes don't do it because of the repercussions they may face, it doesn't make a difference to me, but it's still an issue
John Gruber February 12, 2013 at 11:21 pm
hey paul, did you CHOOSE to like women? If you open up a book once in a while you'll learn you have no where near the scientific background to make that assumption. You're just ignorantly talking out of your ass,
now if a credible scientist told you you are in fact wrong and presented you facts, I'd gander you'd just pretend like you know more than him right?
John Gruber February 12, 2013 at 11:23 pm
haha only in American is someone considered to have an "agenda" when they support equal rights
JOE February 13, 2013 at 12:57 am
This the very problem in this country. People wasting there energy on a moronic topic like this instead of dealing with the real issues that effect the way live with regard to the politicians and the lack of interest that they have in helping the very people that they were elected by. To think that it really matters whether some sports figures are gay is just ignorant and idiotic. This looks like a desperate attempt by the author of this article to find something to write about,
Abby Lee Miller February 13, 2013 at 02:15 am
Being gay is a choice
Dad of Three February 13, 2013 at 03:04 am
Yes, Abby, and the earth is flat, the sun revolves around the earth, there was no Holocaust, pigs can fly, and the sun sets in the East.
John Gruber February 13, 2013 at 03:19 am
wow Abby, since you probably come from ZERO medical/science background I guess we're just gonna have to take your word right? People like you think they know everything. It's called science. Look it up.
Peter the Sailor February 13, 2013 at 03:29 am
We see time and time again the deviant behavior and of course its by choice.
Stevo February 13, 2013 at 03:45 am
If being gay is a choice, than I ask, why would someone choose to be gay? Discuss amongst yourselves!
Stevo February 13, 2013 at 04:04 am
Joe, I agree with you. The thing of it is, is that this is what the people want to know.
John K Massaro February 13, 2013 at 04:50 am
If this board isn't designed primarily for troll bait, I don't know what is...
Dad of Three February 13, 2013 at 05:44 am
Mr Massaro, you've hit the nail on the head, and I hope Pam pays attention.
Patch has been descending to desperate depths for some time, with fewer and fewer attempts at actual journalism, and my original praise for the site, including publicly recommending it to my neighbors who care about our community, has been mistaken. For example, there used to be someone who covered most meetings of the Elwood Board of Education, providing an excellent service to the community, but that seems to have gone the way of the Dodo. It is a sad development, and this invitation to sensationalism and clown tactics just cements the declining opinion.
arl2667 February 13, 2013 at 11:46 am
Exactly right!
Bill Abbott February 13, 2013 at 12:17 pm
Great to see people figuring this all out. they want us to fight so we dont empower ourselves.
AOL owns the patch, Time Warner owns AOL, Time Warner is owned by Ted Turner. Ted Turner is a man who believes the world would be better with 2/3 or 6 billion less people. The elite wish to divide and conquer us. The patch is just an extension of this agenda just like the rest of the main stream media. The elite own the corporations, the media and by the current state of our country they own you. You are not their friend. Want to figure out how corrupt the people who control our country is...Follow the money.

From these post I see, quote Hillary "what difference does it make" the world is changing and pretty soon you will be allowed to marry your dog or cat..Geezzz
Vincent February 13, 2013 at 01:16 pm
Dad of Three: I couldn't agree more. The Patch is a product of the liberal AOL where they spread their liberal anything goes mantra. At one time I read the Mineola Patch to keep abreast of the happenings in the Mineola School District. Since school started in Sept. over four months ago, there has been almost nothing on the operations and running of the schools in this district. I wonder why that would be? It seems to me that if the Williston Times can report that Superintendent Nagler recommended that the school board consider a bond issue to address a portion of the $16M,building improvements, the Mineola Patch most certainly can make their readers aware instead of posting the liberal nonsense that they do. What affects the readers more than the school districts which account for the majority of our taxes? However, now they post articles to promote liberal causes.

@Bill Abbott > where's the Like tab? Agree 100%. "The money" leads to House of Rothschild, British royal family, Vatican, and their hundreds of proxies in government, media, entertainment, the National Security State via CFR Club of Rome Bilderberg etc etc. These are the elements that engineered the 9/11 atrocities AND their cover-up (for example). But I think the "openly gay in sports" debate can be a interesting and constructive exercise nonetheless
Artie Fischl February 13, 2013 at 01:38 pm
That there's no "openly gays in sports" -- in a putatively open society that is addicted to sports -- is an interesting issue that has recently risen to prominence bc of the 49er and bc of Piazza. Try to stake out a position -- without offending anyone! Taboo questions are not necessarily "troll bait."
Artie Fischl February 13, 2013 at 02:06 pm
Tom, I think there's plenty gays in sports and their teammates and opponents know it. It's accepted so they're not forced to conceal it. What players and some fans would prefer is that their sexuality not be broadcast to the point of it being their primary identity and thus a huge distraction. I am sure the players themselves prefer it this way. Those that want players to out themselves are attempting to impose gayness. No one really minds, just keep it to yourself and don't show off.
I think ballplayers do not want identity politics imposed into their domain, that's why no players are outing themselves
Artie Fischl February 13, 2013 at 02:15 pm
Tom Gillen if you're going to tell me no one cares if I raise my boy in a masculine way I am going to tell you that there is a reason that bisphenol A is in plastics. It is known to mimic female hormones and thus to induce effeminacy and the elite social engineers prefer a sterile and non-reproductive populace. They are orchestrating this in a myriad of ways. So, I would tell you that some of us do care that our children are raised in a masculine way
John K Massaro February 13, 2013 at 03:02 pm
Closed-minded & ignorant is no way to go thru life, lady. Why do you seem to have a problem with other people being happy?
John K Massaro February 13, 2013 at 03:09 pm
This isn't a "Taboo" question. It's an unneccessary article showing the lack of tolerance for anything considered left of center by a bunch of judgemental hypocrites who seem to have a problem with the term "Live & Let Live". It's troll bait. It's fodder for the simple-minded clones to come in here & feed off of. It's an enabler for those who are addicted to self-righteous opinions & bitterness...
John K Massaro February 13, 2013 at 03:13 pm
It's kinda sad. I used to enjoy coming here to catch up on the local happenings & engage in some discussions on local topics. Now it's, "Gay athletes" & pretend doctors trying to sell their snake oil in thinly disguised advertisements. Guess I knew deep down that this would happen, as soon as word-of-mouth got out...
John Gruber February 13, 2013 at 04:22 pm
Not unless your cat can sign a marriage license. It's called equality for ALL people, and it's not based on who you sleep with. You should start finding others ways to discriminate against people who are different
John Gruber February 13, 2013 at 04:27 pm
Peter, homosexual behavior is no more deviant than discriminating against someone for whom they have feelings for. You and the rest here have no where near the intelligence required to understand the science of sexuality. Instead, you rely on some fictitious entity to justify your homophobia
Tom Gillen February 13, 2013 at 06:03 pm
Sorry Artie, I was hoping you wouldn't misunderstand what I was saying but I think you did. It definitely wasn't meant in an argumentative way. What I was trying to say is that I, personally, don't care how you or anyone else raises their kids. They are your kids, not mine. Point being that it is nobody's business what any of us do with our lives. Why are we so concerned with what other people are doing? Personally I favor equal rights for all (as per the Constitution)
Tom Gillen February 13, 2013 at 06:19 pm
Well let's stick with the Mike Piazza case for a minute. You are right, a player's (or person's) sexually does not need to be broadcast either on the field or in the world. I think you and I are looking at this differently in this regard: I agree that players probably prefer their sexuality not be broadcast. It doesn't need to be. But in the case of Mike Piazza and situations like his, A) why is his sexuality a question in the first place, and B) if he is gay, shouldn't it be acceptable for him to answer the question with "yes I am gay" without fear of retribution by fans or teammates or owners? I'm not sure what you mean by imposing gayness, but a person should be free to be open about their sexuality if they choose....without fear of retribution. This is America
Tom Gillen February 13, 2013 at 06:23 pm
This is not an article. It is a blog. It is an entry designed to promote discussion. If you prefer not to discuss this topic, then I'd suggest clicking on another blog or article on the site. It's that simple.

What's to look into? Neil Koenig was the owner. He's good friends with my cousin. My cousin toldRead More me "he couldn't make a go of it." The last time I was there was in December. The food was just ok and the service was horrible. Not one course was correct and we didn't even change anything from the menu description. Note to the waitress, the appetizer is NOT supposed to come for dessert!! And Rich is correct. The name was Buongusto's PieSano's. I hope the new owners (Lia's) stop serving Chocolate Mouse (should be Mousse) as per the sign on the Prospect Avenue side of the building.
