The Mind of the Yankee Fan

Taking a look at why many Mets fans hate the Yankees.

I know this is a Mets blog, but this is relevant and it is something I have been dying to dive into for quite some time.

For those of you who don’t know, the Daily Stache and Patch have been sharing some of these Mets posts to help spread the gospel. The response has been excellent on Patch. The comments and conversations have been ongoing and that will only help the Daily Stache in the long run.

One thing I simply can’t wrap my mind around is the Yankee fan that likes to put a damper on everything Mets-related. I know many people who have said to me, “I don’t hate the Mets. Why do you hate the Yankees?” Plain and simple, the fans make that a very easy process.

It’s the whole “kick them while their down mentality.” Here’s one comment from this morning from a guy with the username “Jaguar Guy” on Patch

The choking has begun – sadly. Cough – cough !!!!

Raise your hand if you think that’s unnecessary. These people wonder why we get such great joy out of the Yankees losing. Comments like the one above are a primary reason.

Many Yankee fans (not all) jumped on the bandwagon just because of their winning history. They weren’t following the team when it was down in the dumps. They are frontrunners. It takes true passion and commitment to be a Mets fan. I know people that have crossed the line to the dark side and I have no respect for that. If you root for a team, you stick with them through thick and thin. I root for the Jets, Mets, Knicks and Rangers, so clearly, disappointment is something I have becomes accustomed to in my rooting career.

Before I let the Mets and Yankees fans banter on the topic, let me share one more story regarding my experience with one of the most arrogant Yankees fans I know.

I forget the year, but I was at my mother’s cousin’s house. I was watching a Mets game during which their season was on the line. My dad would meet us there later, but I was there with my mom’s cousin’s husband, Tom. He’s an avid Yankee fan that wants every all-star to be a Yankee, naturally.

The Mets ended up losing the game, but that’s not the point of the story. Tom said the following after the Mets had lost, I was crushed and he was holding the remote:

Now it’s time to put a major league game on.

Are you kidding me? In a time like that, it’s nice to stick the knife in a little deeper. I would later find out that my dad was there before the game ended, but he listened to the end of the game in the car because he didn’t want to be with Tom when the game ended.

So what is it Yankees’ fans? Why do you get such a kick out of making fun of our pain? Mets fans are dying to know.

It goes both ways. I have been a diehard Yankee fan all my life and I really do not hate the Mets. In fact, I have been enjoying their success this season and openly been rooting for them. However, it is the fans who openly despise the Yankees and continuously take shots at payroll (which has always been a ridiculous argument from Mets fans, especially in the late 90's and early-mid 2000's) etc. What it boils down to is that there are level-headed fans on both sides, and uneducated loudmouths on both sides as well, and the latter makes each side hate the other. The best thing to do really is to ignore them, find some smart, level-headed fans to watch the game with and have a nice discussion with and it really becomes more enjoyable. It's tough to avoid the crazies, but it's something worth trying.

Being a fan of your team should not require despising another home-town team in a different league or conference, in any sport. Doing so, despising the Yankees because you are a Mets fan, or despising the Mets because you are a Yankees fan, or any other similar pairing (Jets/Giants, Nicks/Nets, Rangers/Islanders) is tantamount to letting petty jealously overrule good sportsmanship and basic common sense. And it does not sound or look cool. Stupid, or ignorant, yes, Cool, no. Let's Go Mets! Let's Go Yankees!
Anthony Bottan July 23, 2012 at 04:28 PM
Well said, Rich. There's always going to be knucklehead fans on both sides, and you can't lump all Yankees fans into that category. But being a Jets/Yankees fan, I can totally see your point Mike. I know how it feels to root for a team that consistently cuts you deep. But I promise, we're (yanks fans) not all that bad!
Joey Doughnuts July 23, 2012 at 04:37 PM
I totally agree with this. I have always been a NY fan but if the teams go head-to-head I always side with the Mets, Knicks, and Giants. I save my venom for the Miami Heat and anything Boston/New England.
Rich Arleo (Editor) July 23, 2012 at 04:42 PM
Thanks Anthony, I'm in the same boat as you being a Yankees/Jets fans. I see both sides. I'll root for the Giants, but then get infuriated at my friends who are Giants fans who take the pompous/arrogant route laughing at the Jets saying they'll never win etc., etc. But again, there are also other Giants fans whose company I can enjoy. It's just a matter of weeding out the mindless fans.

Yes, the Red Sox-Yankees rivalry is an entirely different matter. True Yankees fans know the significance of The Gate of Heaven, how to get there, and the reason for making the pilgrimage.

As a yankee fan all i have to say who goes to the playoffs? Who has won 27 world series? They will always be better then the mets. All the mets do is let all you fans down constantly. I will say you all stick with your orange and blue but I dont jump on the banwagon and stick with the true NY PINSTRIPES FOREVER!
yanks! July 23, 2012 at 05:17 PM
Mind of a Met fan Michael R! look who does the siily name calling but i guess that what happens when you watch a losing team keep On LOSING AND LOSING! Lets go yanks
Jaguar-Guy July 23, 2012 at 06:57 PM
Just FYI Patch - I wrote the comment "the choking has begun - sadly" because I am a Met Fan. I am no Yankee fan bashing the Mets. I am truly sad that they seem to be losing the close ones so far this 1/2, when they were winning the close ones 1st 1/2. Get your story straight Daily Stache !!

Another late loss. My Mets have lost 10 of 11 since the break, and the difference between the Yanks and Mets is the Yanks trade for Ichiro to fill a spot they need filled - Mets management won't pull the trigger, and it is FRUSTRATING for us fans to stink it up now.

Yankee fan who roots for the Mets. I evened rooted for the Mets in the 2000 World Series (Had tix for game 6) and if Piazza goes after Clemens when he threw the bat , the Mets WIN that World Series, however when Met fans root for the Red Sox that makes my blood boil. Went to Staurdays Met Dodger game and the only way to describe it: torture. Jet Giant fan who loves both but I have to root for the Jets now the wonderful Giants have 4 rings, the Jets need another one.

I love when two sides can coexist. I have two sons and you guessed it, one is Yankee fan the other a Met Fan. During Football season, one is a Jet fan, while the other likes the Giants. It is fun to watch them "discuss" the teams but no matter who is paying they will route for each other. It is all fun until the subway series.

Go yanks!

We will always have 1986... Let's Go Mets!! But I'm not a Yankee hater either, they have some great players who do a lot for the community like Curtis Granderson.
ce July 24, 2012 at 11:45 PM
The Yankees are vilified in every city in which they play, yet the games are almost always sold out. I think what frustrates people is that Yankee fans simply don't care what others say about the the team. The "payroll" argument is ridiculous. In order to win, you must have the best players. In order to get the best players, you must pay them accordingly. It's that simple! Go Yanks! BTW, as an Islander fan, I am (sadly) well-acquainted with frustration!

Does the author forget how many Mets fans there were during their brief heydey in the mid-to-late 80s? Everyone came out of the woodwork claiming to be a life-long Mets fan. I know many Mets fans who were acting like they won the WS when they started out (3-0) this year. So yeah, we can gloat as they come crashing back to Earth. You would think 50 years of history with 48 years of failure would teach some humility. Guess not. :)

I just had a lengthy discussion about this yesterday. I'm not a Yankee hater, just a Yankee fan hater. A few bad apples have spoiled the bunch for me I'm afraid.
Chris Wendt July 25, 2012 at 03:09 PM
You mean, you can pay for performance...and get it? In baseball? In education? Go Yanks! Go teachers!
John Gruber July 26, 2012 at 04:36 AM
how do you call yourself a yankee fan and not root for them in the World Series? And the Mets lost 4 games to 1 Piazza could have sent Mike Tyson to fight Clemons, the Mets were outscored, out hit and out pitched.
John Gruber July 26, 2012 at 04:38 AM
People say yankee fans are bad? I went to the Yankee-Red Sox game where Varitek and Arod fought in a WHEELCHAIR and I still got heckled for wearing yankee gear. my own fault
Jaguar-Guy July 26, 2012 at 10:36 AM
Hey, the Islanders were awesome and were a dynasty. We were cheering 1940 for decades!
Geezer July 26, 2012 at 12:56 PM
Like I said : Tickets to game 6
Tom Gillen July 26, 2012 at 01:11 PM
who really cares - if you a Mets fan, watch your team and root for them. If you're a Yankee fan, watch your team and root for them. Who cares about what the other team, that isn't even in same league, is doing.
Angie Mendez July 26, 2012 at 01:19 PM
First of all, as a Yankees fan, I'd like to say I can't believe that anyone would let you post this article on thier website. Secondly, no matter which team you root for, there are going to be hardheaded fans. You don't think that writing an article about ignorant Yankee fans isnt the same thing your accusing those fans of being... I would say its a little sad that you can't look past rotten fans. You even used a quote from someone that happens to be a Mets fan.
Angie Mendez July 26, 2012 at 01:22 PM
Thats with every team, being a "Yankee fan hater" is a joke.
Jaguar-Guy July 26, 2012 at 01:29 PM
Thank you Angie - I am a Met Fan.
