Should Ike Davis be Sent to the Minors?

The Mets' first baseman is really hurting them at this juncture.

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that Ike Davis is royally struggling right now.

Through 29 games with the Mets this season, Davis has almost twice as many walks as he does hits. The numbers are just scary to look at.He has just 17 hits and a whopping 31 strikeouts in 102 at-bats. That's more than 30 percent of the time!

What's wrong? First of all, he has so much movement at the plate. His strike is way too early,  and he brings his hands down before he swings. There's just too many nooks and crannies right now for him to get going. One thing that should be discussed is possibly sending him to the minors to figure it all out.

Even though he's batting down in the order, his presence is hurting the team. although the Mets do not have a viable option to replace him. The first idea would be to move Daniel Murphy to first and slide Justin Turner in at second. Ronny Cedeno will be the shortstop until Ruben Tejada returns from his injury.

What would you do with Ike?

Ride it out through May, send him down early June if still struggling....at that point put Turner at 1st and Valdespin at short. Don't mess with Murphy now that he's finally playing well defensively.

Cedeno is also hurt I'm pretty sure.

As you said, "the Mets do not have a viable option to replace him."
Davis is still one of the best defensive 1B in the game. replacing him will make the team worse. Murphy is learning 2B. Moving him now will slow his development. Do you really think that Davis will improve with a minor league hitting coach, rather than a major league coach? You seem to have analyzed it pretty well and have all the answers. Maybe you should offer private tutoring.

Ike may have that Valley Fever that we heard about earlier in the spring. You don't want to hurt his psyche by sending him down, but on the other hand, he needs to get back on track. I agree with Anthony Brancato - let him play through May and send him down June 1 if he doesn't improve.

Definitely a good idea. I don't think you can just give up on him, especially with no glaring replacement on the horizon.

They said on the air last night that he should be back in a couple of days, and Valdespin will likely be the odd man out. No disagreement there. He should be playing every day.

Not a bad idea!

Good point! At the same time though, it appears to be more of a mechanical problem than anything else.

Yes, he's really hurting the team as they just complete a third sweep of a NL East team. (Braves, Marlins, Phillies I believe) If not for him, we'd be undeafeated. C'mon guys. Enjoy the ride for as long as it lasts. Cheer Ike on and hopefully he'll heat up as some of the others that have carried us to this point cool down. Let's Go Mets!!!

Hey, right now I'd take Ike over Mark Teixeira--and he's awhole lot cheaper..

Davis over Tex?? Are you serious? Wait until about a month from now and let's compare the two when they face each other in The Bronx.

Last 7 days his average is .250. Let's see if he is getting his groove back before sending him to the minors. http://espn.go.com/mlb/player/_/id/30532/ike-davis Take him over Mark Teixeira? Maybe in a few years perhaps but not at this point in time.
