Zorn's Shutters in East Meadow After Hurricane Sandy

A manager of the eatery said that there are no plans to reopen.

Another storefront has closed on Hempstead Turnpike, but this time it is due to Hurricane Sandy. Zorn's of East Meadow has closed its doors for good after the storm.

A manager of the eatery, who did not want their named published, said that the business suffered damages and power outages.

"It was the last straw," the manager said. "We don't plan to reopen."

The business first opened in East Meadow in 1998.

Hempstead Turnpike has been plagued with vacancies in the last year. Just last month, Hooters closed its doors after operating in East Meadow for more than 10 years.

Customers are urged to visit Zorn's locations in Bellmore (2495 Merrick Road) and Bethpage (4321 Hempstead Tpke). The Bethpage location has been around since 1940.

What do you think about the East Meadow location closing? What do you think should fill the vacant property? Tell us in the comments below.

Hempstead Turnpike looks terrible. Property owners need to fix up their property.

This is wrong. They could not have any more damage than most other homes or bus in that area. Lost power and spoiled food, They are using Sandy as an excuse to abandon the area and will Likely put the insurance and fema $ in their pocket. How outrageous to use the hurricane and try to pass that excuse off to the community. They make great food but that is not enough in today's economy, Customer satisfaction is the bigger product and in that category they score a D for this action.

Obama gets re-elected.Worst hurricane in our lifetime. Zorns closes up. The end is not near, its here.

It's really sad to see Zorn's go!
e November 15, 2012 at 04:06 PM
This is HORRIBLE. Zorns is the best. If one to two weeks out of service is enough to make a business close, we all have to worry!!

I worked at Zorns for two years when I was in high school and I even came back for Thanksgiving to help out because they got so busy. I was even planning on coming back again this year, my plans were set. They did not close because of the storm even though that's what has been said. They have closed because of the owner of the business. The owner is a self centered man who didn't care about East Meadow. He cares about the other two locations more. He caused many people at East Meadow hardships and never cared to do anything. Great food, amazing people but he couldn't care two bits about East Meadow. Everyone in East Meadow loved the store but does he care? No. The damage is not half as bad as he makes it seem. I agree with the fact he probably just wanted to pocket the money. He is a greedy man. I'm sorry you all are going to miss this location, so am I, but I'm glad the owner is no longer torturing the workers. I feel bad for the manager because he is a great man and everyone loved him, he lost his job for no reason but a greedy man.

It's a shame to lose a place like Zorns in East Meadow after a decade. The food was a higher quality than the fast food in the area. Oh well, now I'll have to drive to Bellmore for it. I always liked the "tall guy" manager at this location, even though he was quiet and sometimes not too friendly (maybe it was his boss who was dragging him down all these years?). I hope the staff can find other jobs.

I agree with Ele my son also worked there, he brooke his neck working for them, weeks at a tie without a day off then when he left and got another job they harrest him at the new job calling and saying they where with a credit card company and was asking for information about my son and saying awful things about him after he worked there for such a long time Both my husband and myself went to see the owner in bethpage after we spoke to the police and found out what they did was and could be proscutable offence the harrestment stopped after that. We choose not to go after them., so im glad they closed.......

Its called OBAMACARE...... Its the first of many to fall by the wayside

Ditto Jack.Every employer has to provide healthcare benefits to anyone working 30 hours a week or more.Who could afford that on top of taxes and rents.Small business is dead.People are already being told that the work week is going to be cut to 29 hours.

It's across the street? And not easy by car to do so what does one thing have to do with another?

You have no idea what you are talking about. Look at the exchanges. I cover PPACA for a living. Check the facts, then comment.

To Patch, Please stop asking this dumb question over and over.... What do you think should fill the vacant property?
paul November 17, 2012 at 05:02 AM
Zorns closing this location is a blessing for them. Good for the Zorns family. It was time due to business is not as good as it use to be...... Partial if not all the blame goes to Kate Murray. Keep saying no Kate.... .... The Colisiem was a major part of revenue for the area. And if they colleted insurance or money from FEMA good for them.... You can always go to one of their other locations like I have for many years...

I forgot to mention, congratulations to a new business that just opened on Hempstead Tpk in East Meadow A SMOKE SHOP also known as a place to buy your HOOKAH in East Meadow ... It is right next door to a gold buying shop.. Where was the BZA meeting for this disgrace....????? Keep up the good work Kate, you are a disgrace along with your BZA appointed clowns... I think I will open a Hookah Lounge and supply shop combined with a gold buying pawn shop right in Levittown. Plenty of vacancies in your precious Levittown... How about them apples...

As a customer, Zorns of East Meadow was the best of the three. It was the cleanest an the food was the best. If anything they should have shut down Bellmore. I don't know how that place passes the health inspection.
marianne krause November 19, 2012 at 12:44 AM
you don't know how the east meadow store closed ? clean? I stopped going to the EM store because i was parked in the back near where the dumsters where and i watched as a cook and a couple of other kitchen help were climbing in and out of the dumpster. It was possibly the worst thing i ever saw.
paul November 19, 2012 at 12:55 AM
and that proves what... The old saying is what you do not see doesnt hurt. You should see the kitchens at some of the most famous 5 star restaurants....
Jenn November 19, 2012 at 01:59 PM
I agree that this is an excuse. A thriving business who is operating with real profit would not close up a lucrative location over a power outage and some repairs. I would say they were having money issues before this and are using this to bow out.
Big_E November 20, 2012 at 03:43 AM
Papa John's said they would have to raise the price of a pizza by 14 CENTS. Oh the hardship! So instead of raising the prices 14 CENTS, he will cut people's hours. What a nice guy. SMH.
Zach November 25, 2012 at 07:51 PM
In response to what Marianne said, you are completely wrong. I worked at Zorns of East Meadow for a year and a half, and left in August to go away to school. The EM location is by far the cleanest, seeing as how I have worked at all three at some point. Bellmore is a disgusting roach infected place, and I have no idea how the place passes inspection. Bethpage is not as bad, but I've heard they have had their fair share of rats. In my time working there, I have seen a total of one roach. Friends I have who work at Bellmore talk about seeing roaches on a weekly basis. If workers were climbing in and out of the dumpster (which I highly doubt you saw), I'm sure it was for an important reason and was a one time thing. Do you really think workers enjoy jumping in the dumpster because something important was accidentally thrown away?

Kinda hard to fix up your business if your taxes are so high and business is slow
Hector Gavilla February 11, 2013 at 07:16 AM
If you never owned a business you have NO right to criticize a business owner's decision to close a store. There is only one reason they closed the East Meadow location. It was not profitble. Business 101. You operate a business to make a profit. when the expenses exceed the revenues and no viable plan exists to fix it, it might be time to shut down. I will not debate what those expenses were. Im sure they tried everything to increase profits and decrease expenses. It was not enough to justify keeping it open. Those are the facts.

just a shame i love to eat here and you did not mind paying extra for things because you knew it was not something out of a package and heated. what blows my mind is that why would you not come back hope that some time in the future that the owners might change there mind and come back in the mean time i will visit there other locations.

That place had roaches, hurricane sandy was just an excuse. I loved the place then I found a bloated roach in my cream of spinach I wanted to go back and make seen. But I didnt. Never again. I am traumatized
Greg November 22, 2013 at 02:39 PM
That place ROCKED. Great food, a nice play for dinner. A "bloated roach in cream spinach"? (maybe the roach found it tasty too, they gotta be big and strong!, and what's the difference between a bloated roach and your standard run of the mill roach?) . It's much more fun to eat dinner there, than just take out. I miss Zorns on Hempstead turnpike. Their pies are also amazing. Five stars for Zorns, 4 1/2 stars for their pies, and 1/2 star for the bloated roach.
