Sonic's Desired Location Not Concrete

Despite being declined in their initial quest to come to East Meadow, officials are working on a new proposal.

While Sonic Drive-in officials told Patch in November that they are still interested in an East Meadow location, their desired destination is no longer certain.

Responding to an email from Patch regarding rumors of their looking elsewhere in East Meadow for a potential home for Sonic, Bobby Fannelli, said "there is nothing concrete. We have a broker looking." He then added that he'd let Patch know if they found something.

"We are still very excited about the possibilities of putting a Sonic in East Meadow," Fannelli said last month. "We are looking to have a plan together very soon. When that time arrives, we will inform you of our intentions."

Spencer Hart, the franchisee who also owns the North Babylon location, sought approval last year for eight variance applications at the former Rita's property. These included special exceptions to install a drive-thru window and use a portion of the premise for outdoor dining, as well as variances for off-street parking.

Additionally, they were asking for permission to install 24 menu board signs under two proposed canopies, install a drive-thru preview menu and regular menu board and install a speaker and confirmation screen system for the drive-thru.

Many community members were concerned about the effect Sonic would have on traffic, which Fannelli said they dealt with when the North Babylon eatery opened. Others said that Sonic would be a great addition since it's taking the place of a vacant building.

If Sonic no longer plans on opening at the former Rita's, where do you think they should open? Tell us in the comments section below.

What a shame refusing business in east meadow. Our taxes are high enough. What about using Hooters building next to Wendy's. There's plenty of room there.

seems the old hoots would be logical... can't really see them building off hempstead tpk. ????

Thank Mangano for your high taxes. Oh by the way Kate Murray is having one of her lackey's vote a raise for her next week but don't worry Republicans don't raise taxes.

I figured Hooters as well - I can't see any other area (off hand) that would fit them (other than Pathmark, but that's silly)

Not Concrete??? Are they going to build it out of sticks ?????

The only jobs Mangano can bring to Nassau County is for sign painters to put his name on everything. One day he will be crushed by the weight of his own ego.

I am sure Mr. East Meadow himself will cry again about the traffic .. from across town, no where near the proposed location.. its nice to see the Old Pearl Art is finally being worked on and fixed up for a new business..

The hooters location as it stands is too big for a Sonic. I am sure another chain or a Japanese Restaurant may consider it in the future. As far as Sonic in East Meadow Plaza at the Rita's location with the original 120 parking spot foot print IS THE CORRECT LOCATION.. PERIOD.

What is coming to the old pearl art? I heard some sort of grocery store.

Kate Murray ruined the Coliseum Plans and the Sonic Plans. Kate come on now…. Hooters would be second choice but i agree that the original choice was best. Traffic won’t last forever…. The town needs a tax base but i heard the taxes at Hooters are astronomical… Grocery store is coming to Pearl- maybe Best Yet.

With Best Yet coming to the old Pearl, what does this mean for the old Pathmark? Weren't there rumors of a new supermarket going into that space?
Susan December 03, 2013 at 08:59 PM
From what I heard possibly a Best Yet in the old Pearl and Sams Club was going to be coming to the old Pathmark.

Yeah the folks that voted this down are kicking themselves now when they pass by Rita's and see it is a hangout for the bums. Why have a business that can provide jobs better to have a place for the bums to sleep.
