Sonic Still Planning East Meadow Location

Despite being declined in their initial quest to come to East Meadow, officials are working on a new proposal.

A year and a half after the Hempstead Town Board of Zoning Appeals (BZA) declined Sonic Drive-In's application for East Meadow, the fast food business still plans on coming to the local area.

Bobby Fannelli, a spokesperson for Sonic, said that, while nothing's been finalized, plans are being worked on to move forward with the East Meadow application.

"We are still very excited about the possibilities of putting a Sonic in East Meadow," Fannelli said. "We are looking to have a plan together very soon. When that time arrives, we will inform you of our intentions."

Spencer Hart, the franchisee who also owns the North Babylon location, sought approval last year for eight variance applications. These included special exceptions to install a drive-thru window and use a portion of the premise for outdoor dining, as well as variances for off-street parking.

Additionally, they were asking for permission to install 24 menu board signs under two proposed canopies, install a drive-thru preview menu and regular menu board and install a speaker and confirmation screen system for the drive-thru.

Many community members were concerned about the effect Sonic would have on traffic, which Fannelli said they dealt with when the North Babylon eatery opened.

"Security will be on hand to direct vehicles in a safe manner so as not to interfere with the regular flow of traffic,” Fanelli said. "In North Babylon, security was around until the early winter, directing the surplus traffic onto the shoulder of Deer Park Road in order to acquaint the community with our restaurant’s drive-thru procedure."

Others said that Sonic would be a great addition since it's taking the place of a vacant building.

"All I can say is, something great better be put there in its place because right now it's just an eyesore and to date nothing of value has come to East Meadow in a long while," East Meadow resident Kristina Hollywood said. "I think Sonic would have been a welcomed addition."

Do you think the BZA should grant Sonic's new application to come to East Meadow? Tell us in the comments section below.

Good Luck to her! .... so sad to her go! But oh well..... BUIILD SONIC!
Bill Alderman November 17, 2013 at 12:19 PM
Brent M I would not be so willing to slander people If I were you. I am not Anti-Sonic and neither is Ms. Krause. We were against Sonics proposal EXACTLY as they stated , in their unyielding Corporate model and apparently Mr Hart and Mr Fanelli are now willing to modify their plans to better suit the community. Plus , what does it matter what part of East Meadow that I reside. I still drive and shop in that and many other East Meadow locations. So maybe YOU should get your facts straight before you open your maw.
Frank T November 17, 2013 at 08:57 PM
Community S., I also noticed that ridiculous entrance/exit at the corner of Newbridge and Hempstead Turnpike. I guess the BZA was asleep when this passed or the builder knew which local republican to bribe.
paul November 17, 2013 at 10:49 PM
Or perhaps the property owner who may have been unaware of the reasons why, found out that the club owner complained about his parking spot usage and was subsequently spoken to by the property owner. Just a guess...... Honestly, there is not much to change in the original proposal. It was fine the way it was. I hope the EM misfits stay home when the BZA is consulted. You know who you are.....
Rich November 18, 2013 at 06:42 AM
Unfortunately they won't stay home. They'll go to complain because they are self important blowhards who don't care about condition of hempstead turnpike. They would rather see the stores remain empty...
Butter November 18, 2013 at 08:29 AM
Build sonic!!!! Lets build up our community. Stop building so many stores. Maybe levittown should get it in gear and build where the old kmart still remains vacant
Brent M. November 18, 2013 at 10:38 AM
Bill!!! Your back from hiding ... from your little nutshell you ran too! What was it again you preached.... shop East Meadow stores keep the money in east meadow .. your theory seems to be working with all the closed East Meadow Businesses.. and yes you were one of the huge complainers about traffic and crying how bad the one Sonic would be.. remember
J November 18, 2013 at 05:05 PM
@butter, we don't want Levittown to build in that old Kmart, Home Depot owns/leases that vacant space. If they build that, chances are bye bye East Meadow Home Depot. Or maybe Home Depot will bring their first Home Decorators store to LI in that old Kmart space, that would be nice.
Bill Alderman November 19, 2013 at 11:00 AM
Brent .... I was never Hiding and your accusations are as false as always . My theory and the practice of it still rings true. Yes, I felt the corporate model proposed would be a disaster, which is why 3 other towns on LI rejected. MR Hart was asked to compromise, the plan , to better suit East Meadow, but refused. Now he is back with a new, modified proposal. And many long term businesses left East Meadow for nearby areas , NOT because of residents , but because of greedy landlords and management companies that will not do what is needed to make their properties viable. Building new business locations is cheaper and easier than repairing old ones, That is the issue at hand. Just ask your local Councilman or go to a Chamber of commerce meeting once in a while , instead of spreading partial truths and misleading snippets.
paul November 19, 2013 at 11:13 AM
To Bill Alderman: Once again you have a need to be heard. Your must be confusing reality with your lack of knowledge about the situation. It appears that you still are and were a NEGATIVE voice about Sonic. You have no concept of a franchise model and the reality of the situation. As I have ALWAYS said it was not a done deal and may they prevail with building two Sonics in East Meadow. One off Hempstead Tpk and the other at your residence.
Frank T November 19, 2013 at 01:25 PM
Bill what long term businesses left EM due to "greedy landlords"?
Miriam Hanan November 19, 2013 at 02:15 PM
Businesses opening and staying open helps keep the tax base stable as well as taxes, somewhat. When people look for a new home, they don't want to see eyesore vacant buildings with trash. The county let a huge development go with private capital in the original lighthouse project islanders left town and with the coliseum going downhill so did the restaurants in the area Sometimes you have to put blinders on and welcome the revenue that will be taken in to help out
paul November 19, 2013 at 04:48 PM
To Miriam Hanan: You are so correct in all aspects.
Brent M. November 19, 2013 at 05:08 PM
The East Meadow Chamber of Commerce.. ??? Exactly what have they done to keep the town in order? Because , I beg to differ on the job they have done... and Mr. East Meadow.. you have been in hiding.. ever since you have cried about being Bullied by the numerous people that have disagreed about your opinions on Sonic from the other side of town & no where near the proposed sonic location where you live.. but you did post 2 pictures of trash outside Sonic in NEW JERSEY and the one in BABYLON where you were claiming would come here.. You cried & cried about being Bullied yet isn't it being biased comparing a NEW JERSEY sonic of all places to one that hasn't even been built in East MEadow!!! .... sure you should be pointing the finger Mr EAST MEADOW
lillian November 20, 2013 at 02:28 PM
Brent, there ya go agian allowing yourself and your cronies to batter some one under the guise of voicing your opinion. Why does Mr Alderman exercising his right as a concerned citizen wether or not he is in agreement such a big problem? Your always saying every one is entitled to express themselves.....but i get the feeling thats only true if they agree with you, Paul and Rich . Exactly what are you , IF anything doing besides ragging about how bad things are here how your not getting what you want?
Bill Alderman November 26, 2013 at 09:56 AM
To Frank T - Matt Serra MMA and Lacrosse Unlimited , just to name 2. Each was in EM for over 10 years and moved East on Hempstead Turnpike ....
Brent M. November 26, 2013 at 10:18 AM
Guess, you didn't shop there enough to keep them open Mr. East MEadow
Frank T November 26, 2013 at 11:16 AM
Bill 2 is not "many" and how do you know that the "landlords and management companies are greedy and want to run down the buildings they own"? Maybe their taxes and utility costs tripled in 10 years. Should the landlord absorb all those costs and not pass it down to the tenant? The building where the Lacrosse Unlimited rented was maintained and most in that complex are fully rented. The florist, dry cleaner, Entenmans, locksmith, the bar and Consumers have been there many years.
Brent M. November 26, 2013 at 02:47 PM
@lillian.. Yes.. I am mad at Mr. East MEadow for DISAGREEING with my opinion, that we need to improve business around East Meadow and get rid of the homeless peeing in the business that should've been opened but people that live on the other side of town whine and cry!!! SHAME ON ME for calling him out for Disagreeing with that opinion.. somehow though.. I don't think I'm the only one who feels this way.. why don't you go back & look at the numerous posts disagreeing with Mr. East Meadow..
Bill Alderman December 04, 2013 at 02:18 PM
To Frank T- there were other businesses. However I know the owners of those 2 specifically and that is specifically what they told me . The others that I heard about , were from other residents( from a 3rd party) , but it seems to be consistent with what I learned first hand. To Brent- Historically speaking, many people have disagreed publically with those that spoke out about doing the wrong thing for their community or country.... but they did not resort to the things that you have. PS- Try calling the police to remove the vagrant.... or is that too easy a solution for you.
Brent M. December 05, 2013 at 08:12 AM
@Bill... Bill, Bill, Bill.. have you not read the numerous comments under the "homeless hanging on Hempstead turnpike" article on here... and what it says has been done with calling the cops.. ?? I know you only come out of hiding after you run out tissues from crying 24/7 about being picked on.. but come on... open your eyes, I know they are red from being a scared Little Boy but maybe you should sit the next couple of plays out.... again!!!!
Bill Alderman December 05, 2013 at 01:55 PM
Brent , Brent, Brent Isn't it great for you to be sitting at home hiding behind your keyboard calling people names and spewing sarcasm from your Lazy boy? It is amazing how you say nothing constructive about anything...again
paul December 05, 2013 at 02:06 PM
To Bill: That's funny, Brent made perfect sense.
Brent M. December 06, 2013 at 01:45 AM
@Bill.. and the homeless are gone.. Mr. East Meadow.. once again proved wrong. Are you going to cry again about picked on now??? waaah.. your city in a lazy boy.. wahh sarcasm again.. is that all you got really... ? LOL
lillian December 08, 2013 at 01:46 PM
Brent....perhaps Bill doesn't have the need to lower himself to your level, me i have no problem lowering myself to your level. All you do is spew venom, you talk and talk bout how every one should be doing something about all that is whats wrong with E.M. and yet provide no evidence that you or your friends have done anything to help change thing. Whats up with that? Instead of working together you choose to get your panties in a bunch and work against him, whats up with that? is it so hard fr you to believe that some landlords don't want to do the work needed to keep their tennents?
Brent M. December 09, 2013 at 10:10 AM
@Lillian... what evidence you want? where you want me to drop it off.. ??? Just say the word.. and start looking around at some of the other topics and what I have commented on since that post 3 days ago.. talk about a day late and a dollar short.. because now your making yourself look stupid
lillian December 09, 2013 at 12:06 PM
@Brent, how about right here....it would certainly be a huge change from the venom and sarcasm we usuall y get from you. lol stupid? just following your lead..as i have stated getting down to your level. I have looked at other posts and all i see is a person who lacks humanity a person who raises himself above the less fortunate.....but after reading many of the post on here tht seems to be the growing trend among those living in EM
Brent M. December 09, 2013 at 02:25 PM
@Lillian.. so then leave east meadow.. nobody keeping you here. Oh wah, you don't like my "venom" like I care... who is "we" .. what group has elected you to represent them? All I see is you crying about my posts.. wahhhh
lillian December 09, 2013 at 07:33 PM
Brent you are a walking joke.....so far you have not answered one of my questions hmmmm. No one elected me, it would seem i'm the only wolf among a bunch of sheep... unafraid . Crying? it's true ....crying because EM was once a nice place, full of nice people, not anymore now it would seem the nice people have been replaced by to many like you lacking basic decency and the having the I'm better then you attiude
Brent M. December 10, 2013 at 02:15 PM
Yeah.. great.. like I care.. what are you going to do now? complain more.. yell at me more.. ??? Of course East Meadow was a nice place. ive been here over 30 years.. yeah its changed.. so you don't like my comments oh well.. its just WORDS.. so tell me I'm a joke.. tell me what I do wrong.. yippie.. it STILL DOESNT CHANGE MY MESSAGE.. changes to the homeless and crime in East Meadow still has to be dealt with!!!
