Sonic Meeting to be Held at EMHS Wednesday

CEMCO organized the gathering, which will be held in the Little Theater.

The Council of East Meadow Civic Organizations (CEMCO) announced that there will be a meeting Wednesday from 7-9 p.m. at to discuss Sonic Drive-In, which a spot in East Meadow soon.

Sonic representatives are expected to be on hand to answer residents' questions about the property, which is located at 1900 Hempstead Tpke. at the spot that used to belong to Rita's Ices.

In order to move to East Meadow, Sonic needs to go in front of the Hempstead Town Board of Zoning Appeals (BZA) at 2 p.m. on March 7. Before that, CEMCO officials thought it was necessary to organize a meeting in East Meadow High School's Little Theater.

On Jan. 24, a second adjournment on the manner was granted after it was requested by the East Meadow Chamber of Commerce.

Ted Rosenthal, counsel for the East Meadow Chamber of Commerce (EMCC), said that they asked for the adjournment because they have not “had an opportunity to review the application.”

“We want to know far more about what is going on in that whole shopping center,” he said. “It is a big application and we need an opportunity to review it, so we asked for the adjournment so that we could sit down with the applicant and their lawyers, find out what their proposal is, and see whether this will be a benefit for the businesses in our community.”

Additionally, Rosenthal cited the chamber’s concern about “numerous” violations in the shopping center — East Meadow Plaza — Sonic would be calling home. Though it is not part of the application for the BZA, it does come as part of the entire process, he said.
