Sonic Eyes East Meadow Location [POLL]

Hempstead Town officials confirm the fast food restaurant's application for building permits.

After months of into whether the popular fast food chain Sonic would plant roots in East Meadow, Hempstead Town officials have confirmed that building permits have been filed.

"They do have an application in with the Board of Zoning Appeals," according to Press Secretary Susan Trenkle-Pokalsky.

The proposed location, which would be the first in Nassau County, is where Rita's Ice once stood. Sonic has submitted eight applications for the proposed location, including a special exception for a drive-thru, special exception for partial-outdoor dining and variance for off-street parking. Additionally, Sonic is seeking to install 24 menu board signs, a preview menu board sign, a menu board sign at the drive-thru and a speaker and confirmation board at the drive-thru.

These applications will be discussed at a public hearing slated for Jan. 11, 2012 at 9:30 a.m. in the Hempstead Town Pavillion.

A public relations representative for Sonic would only confirm that they are "looking at East Meadow."

"We don’t yet have final details on everything," Anita Strohm of Barkley U.S. said.

Sonic stands out in the fast food industry by offering customers curbside ordering and dining. A carhop - usually on roller skates - brings the food directly to patrons' car windows. The only other Sonic location on Long Island is located at 1380 Deer Park Ave. in North Babylon.

More minimum wage jobs is not what I would call "adding jobs". We also don't need any more obesity encouraging fast food or it's litter on the roads.

The answer is: 1 - Do not work at Sonic 2 - Do not eat at Sonic (they do have some healthier choices just like McD and BK, and Wendys etc) 3 - All fast food places are under contract to clean areas not only within there spot but a small area surrounding it.

I Like the Sonic idea..I just hate the Coolidge ave...Fast Food garbage strip...We have Wendys..Burger King..and now Sonic to add to the fast food garbage bags being thrown out of vehicle windows..

Added sales tax revenue! Good news, this place (if it ever gets off the ground here in the PRoH) will not only add jobs for young people but because of it's novelty it will attract people from outside the County to come on in and make a sales tax donation to Nassau County. I'm not saying it will save 200 jobs but it's a start. And Paul and I agree on something again, that alone should make you shake your head.

I will agree with you about garbage alley. Sadly garbage happens....

I'd like a Sonic there. That shopping center needs to be filled up. How about a fruit and vegetable store next to Modells? That would be good.

Thanks for the replies everyone! What else do you think about Sonic's potential arrival in East Meadow?

Build it and they will come !

I think the survey needs a third choice .... Would you like to see Sonic come to East Meadow? Maybe- it would bring in needed jobs and attract business and traffic/parking and cleanliness would be a nightmare, but I can't think of a better location within East Meadow.

I think a SONIC location on Hempstead Tpke is a HUGE mistake. I personally saw the traffic caused at the SONIC location in Deer Park and I think it will be a disaster to the flow of traffic on the Turnpike. Drive in that area now and it is impossible to navigate. Mix in the students at the EMHS, the trucks that fly down that road, and the line of cars waiting for their turn at the drive in. This could be one scary scene!

I agree with you Linda whole heartedly. Hempstead Turnpike is already called "Death's Alley" by the media. It is considered one of the most dangerous stretches of roadway in the EAST. The traffic would block EM Ave and access to and from the park. It would exacerbate an already hazardous situation. Wouldn't the Sims/Filene's lot be a better location? Or maybe they could take over the old Pearl paint locaton and forgo the roller skating stall design, like they do in Pennsylvania. A Sonic resaturant like a Jake' Wayback would be nice. I would love East Meadow to be their new home. A compromise needs to be reached. Left unchecked this will have alot of negatives and may be more hurtful to the community than beneficial.

Yes more jobs is a plus
Colleen Ann January 25, 2012 at 09:56 PM
An open business is better than a shuttered one. Period. The traffic can be routed through the huge empty parking lot in front of the Pearl Paint building that's been closed for 10 years and doesn't see any hope of reopening anytime soon. You're not going to see the traffic like you did on DPA because that one was the "first on LI" and there was all that hoopla for like a week. To all of those people complaining about obesity? Please. People are going to eat unhealthy food weather its in this town or the next. Availability isn't the problem, making healthy choices is the problem. You can go to the diner across the street and order a cheeseburger deluxe with a pound of fries. You think that's healthy? If you eat it more than "on occasion" like you're supposed to, that's YOUR fault. Take responsibility for yourself and let these people make money, pay taxes and give HS kids jobs. Jeez.

Went to Sonic in North Babylon today. It was great! The old Ritas location would be perfect and Sonic would be a great addition to East Meadow. Town of Hempstead really screwed this one up.
