Sonic Eyes East Meadow Location [POLL]

Hempstead Town officials confirm the fast food restaurant's application for building permits.

After months of into whether the popular fast food chain Sonic would plant roots in East Meadow, Hempstead Town officials have confirmed that building permits have been filed.

"They do have an application in with the Board of Zoning Appeals," according to Press Secretary Susan Trenkle-Pokalsky.

The proposed location, which would be the first in Nassau County, is where Rita's Ice once stood. Sonic has submitted eight applications for the proposed location, including a special exception for a drive-thru, special exception for partial-outdoor dining and variance for off-street parking. Additionally, Sonic is seeking to install 24 menu board signs, a preview menu board sign, a menu board sign at the drive-thru and a speaker and confirmation board at the drive-thru.

These applications will be discussed at a public hearing slated for Jan. 11, 2012 at 9:30 a.m. in the Hempstead Town Pavillion.

A public relations representative for Sonic would only confirm that they are "looking at East Meadow."

"We don’t yet have final details on everything," Anita Strohm of Barkley U.S. said.

Sonic stands out in the fast food industry by offering customers curbside ordering and dining. A carhop - usually on roller skates - brings the food directly to patrons' car windows. The only other Sonic location on Long Island is located at 1380 Deer Park Ave. in North Babylon.
