Readers’ Choice: Best Staycation Spot in East Meadow

Not going away this summer? We want your pick for top local staycation destination.

With summer fast approaching and children out of school, many load up the SUV and hit the road for a much-needed vacation. Memorial Day weekend kicks off the summer season.

But with sky-high gas prices as a strong deterrent, you might choose not to travel at all this year. There’s also three months of your child’s downtime to account for. How to fill the rest of those dog days?

Staycation, of course.

Patch wants to know where do you go to entertain your family and play locally? Is it a favorite park, bike path, museum, movie theater or kid-friendly lunch spot?

Time to weigh in. East Meadow Patch is looking to unearth the most family-friendly spot in town. Readers’ Choice is a new weekly feature where we ask you – our readers – to tell us your top picks.

Each Monday we’ll list our nominees – this week it’s staycation destination – and ask for your recommendation. Did we leave your go-to spot off the list? Go ahead and add it in comments.

Then vote. Readers' Choice winners are all up to you, so it's important not only to vote below, but also be sure to share this contest with your friends on Facebook and Twitter! Voting closes Friday at 9 a.m.

Friday we’ll announce our winner.

East Meadow library. I love to borrow some books and movies and relax! And the staff is so friendly and helpful.

Thanks for the comment Ender! What do other people think?

The pool at Veteran's Memorial Park. It's the cheapest summer staycation for any family! About $225 for the entire summer for a family or pay as you go! Grab a chair, towel, and some sunblock and just relax. There's plenty of shade there too for those who don't want to sit in the sun. Pool opens the day before Father's Day and closes on Labor Day.

I guess it depends on where you are in life. For me, now, it's the library. When I was a teenager, it was Eisenhower Park (VMP wasn't there anyway). As a mother of children, it was Veterans Memorial Park with it's pool.

It is an honor to have all the above listed amenities in the local area. All of which are in East Meadow. To those who keep saying there is nothing to do here are incorrect. Look around you, it is all at your door steps. Eisenhower Park, Veterans Memorial Park, Speno Park, AMF East Meadow Lanes, East Meadow Public Library which are in in East Meadow, etc For East Meadow, your "Staycation" destiny is right here at home. Use it and enjoy it. You never know when you will lose it. Take advantage of all the other things to do here on Long Island and the entire tri-state area. It is always nice to get away to another destination, but if you use all the above suggestions and more you will not be bored if used correctly. Take in a trip to Manhattan, see the museums, Statue of Liberty, take in a sporting event, enjoy Coney Island, Sheepsead Bay, Jones Beach and more.... http://www.newyorkpass.com/index_attractions.aspx?aid=98&gclid=CLzx77eg768CFQgDQAodrlh31w http://www.nyc.gov/portal/site/nycgov/menuitem.e2a1b26d9be35ff6a62fa24601c789a0/ http://www.nycgo.com/ http://www.discoverlongisland.com/explore/default.aspx

Personally all the above need to be enjoyed over a period of time. And that would be a great STAYCATION. Relax and enjoy. You can also add reading the PATCH while on your staycation...

Thanks Paul for the ideas!

@ Paul, TMI as the kids say. The question was about staycations here in EAST MEADOW. I think it's wonderful that we can 'advertise' our own East Meadow activities. Maybe you can write a Patch article on all those other activities that are ouitside of the area since that wasn't the topic of THIS article.

@Susan- Are there any other places you would suggest?

In East Meadow proper? I think you've got it covered. Between the parks and the pools, you can have a nice staycation if you want to relax and have some fun. To me, relaxing is what any vacation should be about. I spent a week in DisneyWorld a few years ago and needed a vacation from my vacation. The topic was East Meadow but there are wonderful things to do within a small radius of East Meadow, including the South Shore beaches and Museum Row which are close-by. The Laser Bounce place in Levittown looks like fun as well. There are a lot of different activities to be enjoyed at Eisenhower Park including mini golf, the driving range, the playgrounds, BBQs, concerts, movies, fireworks, etc. Veterans Park has tennis and basketball courts, the playground, arts and crafts, and cheerleading, just to name a few,, and of course, my favorite is the pool. I'm not that familiar with the activities at Speno Park anymore but it's a great park for kids. You might also want to take some time and go shopping right here in East Meadow. Spend some money at the businesses right in your own neighborhood! Show your support! Of course, Sonic might have been a fun place to visit on a staycation. Well, maybe next year. :)

Just providing additional information for those who may be interested. It certainly is not to much, I was just broadening ones thoughts on what they may want to do locally in the tristate area... A Staycation can even become a Daycation....
