Plans Call for NUMC to Hire Non-Union Workers

The plan, according to Arthur Gianelli, would help the hospital "adapt to more efficient care delivery."

Officials at (NUMC), the county's only public hospital, are planning to create a non-profit subsidiary that would allow them to hire non-union employees, according to Newsday.

The new entity would be called NuHealth Services Corp., which would co-run the East Meadow-based hospital, according to documents submitted to New York State Health Department.

NuHealth Services Corp. would run the existing health programs and facilities along with the existing public benefit corporation, the Nassau Health Care Corp. The plan must be approved by the state Health Department's Public Health and Health Planning Council, state officials said.

The benefit for NUMC is that the new system would allow the hospital to hire private, non-sector employees. Arthur Gianelli, the president and CEO of NuHealth, said the plan would provide the hospital with flexibility as it "seeks to re-configure and adapt to more efficient care delivery that is required for its survival," according to the report.

"The union can represent such employees, assuming it follows the proper process to do so," Gianelli added.

Civil Service Employees Association (CSEA) President Jerry Laricchiuta told Newsday that, if the state approves the hospital's request, the union may take the hospital to court.

"We will fight to the death on this one," Laricchiuta said.
