The former Pearl Paint building is one of the most talked about vacancies in the East Meadow community.
As in November of 2011, for most of the year, the building, located at 1980 Hempstead Turnpike, is unoccupied. Once the fall rolls around, a halloween store rents the space for a brief time, only to move on when spooky season is over.
The store is 30,600 square feet on an 11-acre lot, which features about 450 parking spaces, according to LoopNet.com. Situated in between the Wantagh and Meadowbrook Parkways, this is a well-traveled area of Hempstead Turnpike.
For today's question, we want to know your thoughts. What do you think should fill the vacancy? Tell us in the comments.
The TOH, BZA and a want to be politician Pat Maher and her little minded followers should definitely be ashamed of themselves for the Sonic issue. By the way keep in mind that the Sonic issue may not be dead in the water. It may be resurrected in the very, very, very near future. Stay tuned!
Nothing "family-oriented" will ever be allowed to open there because Pat Maher and her tiny band of followers will go to the BZA screaming that there are 3 bars in the shopping center (it's ONE bar and TWO clubs) and children will be influnced by the people who frequent them. What BS!! I am so tired of the same rhetoric over and over again. The owners of Zachary's and Aura will complain if any store there is open past 9 pm because it will interfer with their parking situation. No matter what comes there, it's liable to be the same "Sonic" arguments all over again. How sad for East Meadow that a few people can ruin it for the rest of us and in Sonic's case, all of Nassau County!!
Your comment - "It was just a tossed out question by the Patch about the building not a debate about Sonic again." You are so wrong. The Sonic scenario will come up over and over every time a new business wants to open in this shipping center. The Patch is giving the local residents a voice to let the public know that several small minded individuals with a political agenda and they have friends at the BZA that were influenced by a friendship rather than the cold hard facts of the Sonic issue. So yes it needs to be mentioned as often as possible. Reminder the Sonic issue may be resurrected in the very near future. The club owner, BZA, TOH and a feeble minded "Political Want To Be" will be left out in the cold next time around......
Great comments, right on target. Kudos to you....
I just hope something useful will open there - love the idea of HOME GOODS! The latest it would probably stay open is 10:00 (except around the holidays when it will be later). @Susan..would love to know where you get your info from!
I stopped schelpping to Trader Joe's when Shoprite opened again. It didn't pay to make the trip for the few things I bought. If I'm in the Plainview area, I'll go to that one. Maybe Guiseppe's should move into that space. I asked when I was in the store and was told they didn't have plans to do that but who knows. But I really love the idea of a Home Goods especially with Marshall's in the shopping center right behind it. They're owned by the same company.

Personally I wish Pathmark would move into Pearl space. I hate the space they have now (around the corner) - it's just so dark and vacant and depressing, not to mention scary after certain hours of the day.
Take Charles Lindbergh Boulevard, go through Nassau Community College or Quentin Roosevelt Boulevard, to South Street/Stewart Avenue, take the Meadowbrook ramp but get off on Dibelee Drive by Lowes, then head to Zeckendorf Boulevard. It sounds more complicated than it is, and you avoid Roosevelt Field Mall and Old Country Road.
