Patch Question: What Business Should Occupy Pearl Paint Space?

Share your thoughts in the comments below.

The former Pearl Paint building is one of the most talked about vacancies in the East Meadow community.

As in November of 2011, for most of the year, the building, located at 1980 Hempstead Turnpike, is unoccupied. Once the fall rolls around, a halloween store rents the space for a brief time, only to move on when spooky season is over.

The store is 30,600 square feet on an 11-acre lot, which features about 450 parking spaces, according to LoopNet.com. Situated in between the Wantagh and Meadowbrook Parkways, this is a well-traveled area of Hempstead Turnpike.

For today's question, we want to know your thoughts. What do you think should fill the vacancy? Tell us in the comments.

Instead of another high price store like Trader Joes, how about something useful like a business school ?
Jaime Sumersille April 19, 2012 at 04:19 PM
@Denise DiBenedetto Callan via Facbeook: We are not talking about the parking lot we are talking about the "building itself" right? So, no Sonic would not fit inside that building. It was just a tossed out question by the Patch about the building not a debate about Sonic again. Sorry Russ.

HOME GOODS!!

They have to watch what they put there because there is a BAR in the parking lot and those people might run into the people of the new establishment, As the TOH used to reject the Sonic. That was ridiculous !!!!!!

I have to agree with what Karla said above, a Trader Joe's would be awesome!! But I know there's one coming soon in Westbury (more new construction, right?) so :-/

Whole Foods!!

Right on target Stu. The TOH, BZA and a want to be politician Pat Maher and her little minded followers should definitely be ashamed of themselves for the Sonic issue. By the way keep in mind that the Sonic issue may not be dead in the water. It may be resurrected in the very, very, very near future. Stay tuned!

what about an APPLE store.. like a legitimate Apple store.. ?? Not an independant Authorized Dealer.. an actual APPLE store.. how many of those do we have close? there is one in mall? Manhasset too? .. Or would that interfere with the Mighty AURA and ZACHARYS... and cause problems with these "sucessfull" buisnesses..
MAZIE April 20, 2012 at 11:39 AM
trader joes or fairway
Jenn April 20, 2012 at 12:23 PM
Unfortunately this is not always the case. Sometimes the write off benefits them more to counter their other incomes than having the space rented with some kind of money flow. It's "landord101".

Garden City is too far for you?
det2659 April 20, 2012 at 01:35 PM
Keep the building closed so the Town Zoning Board does not have to make a decision.
Strug Lynn April 20, 2012 at 02:16 PM
Why would the opinions of anyone on this site influence what business would rent that building? Frankly, the owner doesn't seem to care. That whole place is an eyesore, no one takes care of the property (reportedly there are many violations)and I don't think the owner should be getting this free publicity to help him rent his overpriced store. But that's just me.
Carol Miller April 20, 2012 at 04:41 PM
Home goods, Petco, or Lifetime fitness would be great.
Geraldine Morgan April 20, 2012 at 07:44 PM
Uncle GuiSeppes or reconsider Sonic. If not I would like to get a group of investors together to open a "CHAIN OF EMPTY STORES" The TOH apparently doesn't know East Meadow has plenty of Empty Stores
Susan April 20, 2012 at 09:20 PM
Fairway is opening where the Home Depo Expo used to be down near Friday's off Merrick Avenue. East Meadow Plaza is too close to open another one. Whole Foods is a very expensive store and they don't think the neighborhood would support it. I was told Trader Joe's is not interested and will be opening in the new Galleria Mall on Old Country Road. Another arts and craft store would be a good idea but East Meadow is sandwiched between two Michael's already so maybe it would be too much competition for another chain. But you never know. Home Goods is a great idea but they might stay open late and use up too many parking spaces during holiday time and then the club owners will complain. Nothing "family-oriented" will ever be allowed to open there because Pat Maher and her tiny band of followers will go to the BZA screaming that there are 3 bars in the shopping center (it's ONE bar and TWO clubs) and children will be influnced by the people who frequent them. What BS!! I am so tired of the same rhetoric over and over again. The owners of Zachary's and Aura will complain if any store there is open past 9 pm because it will interfer with their parking situation. No matter what comes there, it's liable to be the same "Sonic" arguments all over again. How sad for East Meadow that a few people can ruin it for the rest of us and in Sonic's case, all of Nassau County!!
Susan April 20, 2012 at 09:21 PM
Another fitness place would never be allowed to open there. North Shore Fitness is already in the Plaza.

To Jaime Summerville: Your comment - "It was just a tossed out question by the Patch about the building not a debate about Sonic again." You are so wrong. The Sonic scenario will come up over and over every time a new business wants to open in this shipping center. The Patch is giving the local residents a voice to let the public know that several small minded individuals with a political agenda and they have friends at the BZA that were influenced by a friendship rather than the cold hard facts of the Sonic issue. So yes it needs to be mentioned as often as possible. Reminder the Sonic issue may be resurrected in the very near future. The club owner, BZA, TOH and a feeble minded "Political Want To Be" will be left out in the cold next time around......
paul April 21, 2012 at 01:14 AM
To Susan: Great comments, right on target. Kudos to you....
Susan April 21, 2012 at 04:47 AM
Totally agree with you Paul. Sorry Jaime but you really are wrong. Sonic will now be synonymous with East Meadow Plaza whether it ever opens or not. Any business that wants to open in the Plaza will fall subject to the same arguments that were put forth for Sonic. And if they're not, then there is a REALLY big problem with the BZA. Oh right. There already is one.
Brent M. April 21, 2012 at 04:35 PM
Amen to that!!! Way to have faith in our kids.. Has any buisnesses opened up in Meadow Commons yet? or is it still just another unoccupied strip mall??
Susan April 21, 2012 at 05:09 PM
Timmy B., Meadow Commons didn't look ready to be occupied the last time I passed there which was earlier this week. It's not 100% finished yet. They're just in the renting stage now.

Bummer about Trader Joe's not being interested. I love that store and hate that I have to travel all the way to south Merrick - but in the end it's worth enough for me. I won't go to the one in Westbury because that will be a parking/driving nightmare. LOVE the news about Fairway opening in Westbury where Home Depot Expo used to be. I just hope something useful will open there - love the idea of HOME GOODS! The latest it would probably stay open is 10:00 (except around the holidays when it will be later). @Susan..would love to know where you get your info from!
Susan April 23, 2012 at 05:12 PM
I have connections ... LOL. Seriously though, I read the business section of the newspaper and sometimes it's mentioned there. I read about Fairway in the paper. Others have actually gotten in touch with Trader Joe's and I found out through the grapevine. There is a list somewhere with the businesses that are coming to the Galleria. I do talk with people from the TOH though and have sometimes found out info from them. I knew about Sonic for way over a year already. I stopped schelpping to Trader Joe's when Shoprite opened again. It didn't pay to make the trip for the few things I bought. If I'm in the Plainview area, I'll go to that one. Maybe Guiseppe's should move into that space. I asked when I was in the store and was told they didn't have plans to do that but who knows. But I really love the idea of a Home Goods especially with Marshall's in the shopping center right behind it. They're owned by the same company.

Add one more to the list... http://www.loopnet.com/Listing/17590817/1882-Front-Street-East-Meadow-NY/
Rebecca May 22, 2012 at 04:09 AM
Anyone else try complaining to the TOH that these clubs have more people than they're allowed to? Personally I wish Pathmark would move into Pearl space. I hate the space they have now (around the corner) - it's just so dark and vacant and depressing, not to mention scary after certain hours of the day.
Rebecca May 22, 2012 at 04:17 AM
@Karla, the Galleria site is actually not bad from East Meadow if you stay on the back roads. Take Charles Lindbergh Boulevard, go through Nassau Community College or Quentin Roosevelt Boulevard, to South Street/Stewart Avenue, take the Meadowbrook ramp but get off on Dibelee Drive by Lowes, then head to Zeckendorf Boulevard. It sounds more complicated than it is, and you avoid Roosevelt Field Mall and Old Country Road.
