No Movement on East Meadow Sonic Front

Bobby Fanelli told Patch that no decision has been made as of yet.

There's still no word as to whether or not Sonic Drive-in a space in East Meadow, according to Bobby Fanelli, the Chief Operating Officer of the Sonic in North Babylon.

"We are still deciding what to do," Fanelli told Patch via email Tuesday. "I will update you when we make a decision."

Spencer Hart Sonic to the spot formerly occupied by Rita's Ices at 1900 Hempstead Turnpike. The proposal by the Hempstead Town Board of Zoning Appeals (BZA) and no Hart is left contemplating his next move.

For the latest updates on Sonic's decision, please like East Meadow Patch on Facebook and follow Patch on Twitter.

Hart was seeking approval for eight variance applications, including special exceptions to install a drive-thru window and use a portion of the premise for outdoor dining, as well as variances for off-street parking. Additionally, they were asking for permission to install 24 menu board signs under two proposed canopies, install a drive-thru preview menu and regular menu board and install a speaker and confirmation screen system for the drive-thru.

Reactions regarding the BZA's decision, and Hart has the right to appeal the ruling or submit a modified application.

I'd like to see Sonic in East Meadow but Spencer Hart will be crucified before (if) he gains approval. Dealing with the TOH is not worth the aggrevation, along with too many closed minded residents that cannot see past their nose.
The TOH Board is sorely in need of an overhaul.

Chairman Mao has decided for all of us that Mr. Hart, Sonic and the sales tax revenue that they would bring have absolutely no place here in the People's Republic of Hempstead.
It would ruin the 'suburban charm' that the abandoned buildings and storefronts has created on Hempstead Turnpike.

When (not if) Sonic is finally completed in East Meadow it will be a BIG news event for the TOH.
Photo ops for everyone who originally said no. What malarkey ! Keep thinking positive. There still may be some wheeling and dealing behind the scenes. In other words some common ground to be had... And perhaps the over occupancy club owner should check the dates on his business permits, they may just be up for renewal with the TOH/BZA...... See the nonsense Billy Deans in Bellmore had to go through after years of being a long standing good neighbor... Your hearing cant be soon enough...

I can't imagine why Sonic wants to waste any more time with East Meadow. All they have to do is look around to realize this place is on a downward spiral.
JACK COLLINS July 25, 2012 at 06:39 pm
I have to agree with the 4 previous comments. East Meadow is in a downward spiral. Why allow someone like Sonic who can add to the tax revenue of East Meadow when we have the Nassau County Jail, Nassau University Medical Center and Eisenhower Park all contributing zip zilch nada nothing in taxes but all located in East Meadow. Maybe if Sonic promises the T O H they wont pay a dime in taxes then maybe they will be allowed to move in.

The TOH blew it with the Coliseum, don't let them blow it with Sonic. Our kids need the jobs and we need the tax breaks. I say yes to Sonic

Do we really need another crappy fast food place? For heavens sake aren't there enough wrappers floating around as it is? With the exception of Selden this is the fattest place I've ever lived. And as far as I remember they only have 1 fast food place. Restaurants in East Meadow are mysteriously closing with no warning. Are you really going to eat enough garbage to support a Sonic on top of McDonalds, Burger King, Wendy's, Checkers, Wayback Burgers, KFC, 3 Dunkin Donuts, that gross hot dog truck, and 2 Subways? There's a Stop and Shop here too you know. Why don't you fatties bake a chicken once in a while?

It is kind of funny that a homeless lad that has been staying around the location (when I do not tell him to move on) knows all that is going on with the Sonic.
Even he wants one to be built.... He seems to be kind of intelligent about the subject.... Interesting lad to chat with.... Amazing....... Even he thinks Sonic would be an asset to the parking lot/area. He stated that a Sonic would be much better than what is there now......... "A VACANT PROPERTY......" And he said that the club is only open two night a week why the hell would they even care..... He then said that the story about more traffic was nonsense, people are already driving by.... In case you are wondering, he really did say all that..... He deserves a limeade and some tater tots........ LOL

Found this on the TOH website...
951/12. - 954/12. EAST MEADOW - Callahan's Restaurant Corp., Special exception to use part of premises for place of public assembly & amusement (cabaret, live music-indoors & dancing); Special exception for outdoor dining & special exception for accessory use (outdoor bar & storage); Variance in off-street parking; Maintain 10' high fence., S/E cor. Hempstead Tpke. & East Meadow Ave., a/k/a 1964 Hempstead Tpke. (S.E.Q.R. determination not made).... I am sure the TOH will deny this request too. As they should..... Sonic Billy Deans etc.....

someone please get This guy a mallet so that he does not have to try so hard to...Beat his dead horse!
paul October 4, 2012 at 10:31 pm
To Billy:
Oh poor Billy....... It is far from a dead horse. Thought you were done with the Patch. You said that on a past comment.. Anyway, the permits should be denied as the TOH denies everything.... Calahans will be no different.... Calahans deserves what the TOH will give them, a fight...... There are plenty of alcoholic establishments in the area.....
Bill Alderman October 9, 2012 at 03:07 pm
Yo Paulie
I am in no way poor and I never said I was done with the Patch, just done blogging so you could hang a target on my back twice a week. I will forever extend my right to be the voice of reason and sanity, while you, sir are a twister of verbage. And to show you how much you know, Callahan's (2 L's buddy) deserves none of the negativity you profess. They are more than an alcoholic establishment, THEY actually make an AMAZINGLY WONDERFUL ( non-fast food HAMBURGER). You should try it some time , instead of cruisin' drive thrus.
paul October 9, 2012 at 03:46 pm
Oh my, Billy just woke up...
You are actually more the "voice of illogical reason and insanity".... Anyone can see that if they read any of your past blogs... REALLY! Sonic is not a well done issue. It is still on the burner. As far as Callahan's goes, watch how the TOH will make them squirm. Callahan's will be no different.... Been wondering where the extra parking stall lines came from in the rear of Callahan's..... Just asking.... And by the way, your use of "Yo" shows everyone your ignorance.. Just pointing that out too.... ......................................................

An article from 2007:
I see this became a non issue. http://www.antonnews.com/westburytimes/2007/04/27/news/civic.html People in EM make big deal out of nothing...... Hope Sonic pursues with VENGEANCE......

I am a forty seven year resident of East Meadow (my whole life) and new to Patch that I stumbled on at 2 am looking for an appliance repair person for my fridge. I have seen the good, the bad and the ugly of EM. East Meadow Plaza is a special place for me, I used to play pinball at Pinball Palace, go to the movies at The Jerry Lewis Theatre, eat Breyers Ice Cream and got my first job at Contented Pet which I eventually bought and moved to East Meadow Mall. I closed my store in 1997 due to running costs and lack of business with opening of Petco and Petsmart. I never thought I would condone a national chain but I have to say if they can pay the rent and taxes let them in, they are a presentable looking establishment with so-so food. As far as traffic is concerned I believe most EM resident can suck it up for a month until the novelty wears off. We have to start somewhere why not there. I was debating on whether or not to say something but Blaise, are you kidding me? One last thing to ponder, Home Depot owns other properties close to EM and could pack it up and leave which would be great to have that big empty space to fill. I only mention this because I travel around the country quite a bit and it seems all of the thriving Home Depot seem to have a Sonic either in their parking lot or close to it. I know if I was HD I would have left EM with the constant complaints from certain neighbors.
