New Parrot Shop Opens in East Meadow

BirdBrain Parrots, sells exotic animals and teaches owners how to care for them.

BirdBrain Parrots is not the typical pet store. The business that has been in the newly built Meadow Commons for six months is a resource for animal owners, which teaches them how to properly care for their pets--specifically parrots.

"Having a bird is not the same as having a dog," Gayle Pezzo, manager and treasurer of the business said. "To handle a bird, it has to become accustomed to people's hands and trust has to be built in the relationship."

Pezzo, a psychotherapist for many years, said that she realized that there is a lack of education on how to care for the animals.

"I was sold a bird years ago with no information on how to take care of it," she said. "That's when I started to do my own research and became a rescue."

All of the birds sold in the store were raised by Pezzo in her East Meadow home and she works with licensed professional breeders.

BirdBrain Parrots does not stock parrots and each bird has to be ordered by the customer. The business sells exotic pets such as rabbits, reptiles, guinea pigs and hamsters, as well as premium foods, special items and toys for all animals.

Pezzo said that not only will customers walk out with a pet, but also with knowledge.

"I give info regarding diet and care," she said. "I am not really working with the birds, but with the people."
