Mangano Eyes New Skating Rinks for Eisenhower Park

The project would be privately funded, with the County netting a piece of the profits.

Nassau County Executive Edward Mangano is looking to have two indoor skating rinks installed at in East Meadow, according to Newsday.

The idea would be to have a private funder for the project that would handle all of the costs, and the County would net some of the profits.

"The county would spend no money on this project, but enter into a revenue-sharing agreement with the operators to generate additional revenue to help the county hold the line on property taxes," Mangano spokesman Brian Nevin told Newsday.

From Newsday:

On June 13, the county issued a request for proposals from "qualified developers for the development of a public twin indoor ice rink skating facility within the limits of Eisenhower Park in East Meadow.

Do you think that indoor skating rinks are a good idea? Tell us in the comments.

Is there still the small one at Rexcorp Plaza?????
paul July 18, 2012 at 04:28 PM
Since it says indoor will it be used all year round.....???? Like the one at the Aviator Complex in Brooklyn on Flatbush Avenue. That one is FANTASTIC!!!!

Terrible idea. The county already has several indoor rinks. Eisenhower park has an indoor pool that was expensive to build and is now falling apart. The batting cage is closed most of the time. It would be nice to leave some open space in a park and not build on every square inch.

We need more open space not more indoor entertainment. If there was real money to be made a private developer could have already built one in the old pearl paint building or where Kmart used to be. Leave the Parks to the trees, bird, and people. Mangano doesn't care about Parks he cares about money.

Actually how about cleaning up the park. Every time we go there there is not enough staff to patrol the grounds and there are large groups of people that after a few drinks get beer balls. It's hot already then they start getting nasty and it's not always a fun time at the playgrounds. The older kids won't let the younger kids play on the equipment sometimes. Also, how about making a free workout in the park for nassau county residents. And as an incentive to create a "healthier nassau" a small reduction on property taxes as a reward for losing weight and getting healthier! Or how about funding a program where families could work out with their children and get everyone in the family off the damn couch and outside. I believe that if Mangano put into place a program for families who cannot afford much right now, to get them healthier, it may help reduce some of their financial burden with exercise. There is such an epidemic of obesity, diabetes and such that people have to decide between food or medicine. Well how about finding a way to make people healthier. Have like a card reader to record who is coming and when and give incentives.

Why don't they just start enforcing the $5/car rule for people who visit Eisenhower Park from outside Nassau County?
paul July 19, 2012 at 03:16 AM
It is now $10.00.. And it is so stupid. Come one come all and enjoy.....
Rebecca July 19, 2012 at 03:28 AM
I don't see a problem with charging. It's a County park, paid for by County taxes, so if you live outside the County, you aren't supporting it as much as you are if you live here (and spend more of your money here).

It is a beautiful park. Let all enjoy its amenities. If they charge it will be underutilized. Lets share in our good fortune of having a beautiful park.. Besides, when I have a picnic and invite persons that live outside of the area why should they have to pay a price? They are my guests..
Amanda July 19, 2012 at 09:38 PM
They aren't charging all the homeless people who have set up camp in the park an entrance fee........

An indoor skating rink would be great! My kids love ice skating year round. Right now we go to Newbridge Road Park. Why not? A great way for the county to make some money?

Giving, Allowing, Leasing or whatever other term you call it of public county property to private business even with a profit split is never a good idea. This is the taxpayers property and they have no right to do so - when will government & business stop getting in bed together. It's wrong !!!

So much money was spent putting in the new "accessible" playground by parking field 4 - already a swing is broken, one of the spinning play things is broken and has a giant orange construction road "barrel" over it. No one took the time to consider how close the sand play area was to one of the playsets, so of course the entire playset is covered in sand and hence it's dirty and slippery. They installed 2 picnic tables in the entire area, both in blazing sun during lunch time, so if you want to eat you have to set your kids up on a bench. POOR PLANNING. This is the same poor planning that has put the county into many other messes - including the pool. We need better minds - who thinks things through before acting. So now the original big play area closer to the turnpike is also needing repairs - one of the tire swings has been missing for more than a year. There are "potholes" in the rubber matting that are a trip hazard - in many places. I am not against the plan, but the county needs to learn from the past. Who will maintain the new building? Hopefully not the same people responsible for maintaining the playgrounds or the pool.

I won't hold my breath. I'm still waiting for the dog park they said they would open.

Claudine 10:58 pm on Wednesday, July 18, 2012 "Also, how about making a free workout in the park for nassau county residents. And as an incentive to create a "healthier nassau" a small reduction on property taxes as a reward for losing weight and getting healthier!" my health and my property taxes have nothing to do with each other and the fact that you would even say that kind of blows my mind. with the failing economy people are working 1-2 jobs and 40+ hours a week just to keep their homes, where would people even find the time to go to this "free gym". Not to mention where do you expect the money to come from for this gym? its not just going to appear they would go into our property taxes and drive them up.
