Mama Yogurt, a franchise with three other locations in the US, has opened in East Meadow.
The new business, located at 2322 Hempstead Turnpike, opened in a storefront that was formally a hair salon.
"The building was vacant for three months before we came in," Manager Jerry Zheng said. "We are happy to be open."
Zheng said that Mama Yogurt, which has locations in Queens, Missouri and Florida, offers 16 flavors of frozen yogurt, as well as 42 toppings. He said that the franchise offers healthier alternatives than other yogurt shops.
"We don't use powders and a lot of sugars," he said. "We use whole milk."
Yogurt Crazy opened not too far from Mama Yogurt less than two months ago, but Zheng said that he is not worried.
"They have their customers and we have ours," he said. "We are going to be OK."
