Library Board Moves Forward Toward Completion of Atrium Project

The new piece that the library is set to acquire will help address the library's outlet accessibility issue.

The is moving forward in an effort to make upgrades to the Library Atrium, and those changes will help patrons.

The library has the go-ahead to replace furniture in the atrium, which comprises  1960's tables and 1986 chairs, and the new equipment will be outlet accessible so users with laptops will have an easier time plugging in.

"Originally when this area was upgraded, the concern about plugging in wasn't really an issue," Assistant Library Director Rocco Cassano said. "Now that laptops are everywhere, we need to give people what they need to stay online."

Cassano has put in the order for the piece, which will have seven terminals. Separately, Cassano has placed an order for seven chairs that will accompany the new piece. The cost of the project is estimated at $13,000, all of which will come out of the furniture line of the library's budget. Officials are aiming to have the project completed in March, according to Cassano.

"We are addressing a need of a community," Cassano said. "We have a fantastic free WiFi service, and many times people need an electrical outlet."

Currently, the library has several terminals set up, each of which has a one-hour time limit for usage. If there is a waiting list at the end of that time, the patron has the option of getting on the list for a second turn. Users may use terminals for a maximum of four hours per day. Cassano added that he is also looking into getting some additional task lighting for the atrium as well.

"That area isn't very well lit," Cassano said. "We would like to make improvements there as well, although that is only in the preliminary stages."
