Former Work Apparel Store Remains Vacant

The space at 1948 Hempstead Turnpike once housed WorkNGear.

The building at 1948 Hempstead Turnpike that once housed WorkNWear, a retailer that specializes in work apparel and footwear, has remained vacant for more than three years.

The empty space, that is located in East Meadow Plaza, sits between Payless and North Shore Fitness.

Larry Samuels, owner of North Shore Fitness, said that he would like to see any type of business open.

"Anything that would be positive to East Meadow would be good because anything is better than a vacant store," he said. "I wanted to see the Sonic open in the plaza because I thought that would benefit East Meadow also, but that did not happen."

Ruthie Spencer, an employee at the nearby Beach Bum Tanning Salon, said that she would like to see a Starbucks or Dunkin Donuts in the vacant space.

"We have so many places to eat and the convenience of a coffee store would be nice since we open at 7 a.m., when none of the other businesses are open," she said.

Peter Bruce, manager of said that he believes that a specialty store could do well in the plaza.

"There is a pretty wide range of stuff here, so a specialty store that sells name brands could work," he said.

What do you think should fill the vacant property? Tell us in the comments below.

I have the greatest comment of all:
Some your comments indicate that you have no idea where anything is located in the area..... Just an observation......... a bagel store a dunkin donuts.... wow that is deep thinking..... I guess intelligent life as we knew it left the Island years ago, or maybe it was never present.. Just saying... Sorry I very seldom give breaks.....

you could walk through the tunnel from this vacant spot into the pathmark plaza and be at a bagel store within 30 seconds after leaving the tunnel. Technically by walking a bagel store is closer then the dunkin donuts on the other side of Home Depot.

As per the question:

What's to look into? Neil Koenig was the owner. He's good friends with my cousin. My cousin toldRead More me "he couldn't make a go of it." The last time I was there was in December. The food was just ok and the service was horrible. Not one course was correct and we didn't even change anything from the menu description. Note to the waitress, the appetizer is NOT supposed to come for dessert!! And Rich is correct. The name was Buongusto's PieSano's. I hope the new owners (Lia's) stop serving Chocolate Mouse (should be Mousse) as per the sign on the Prospect Avenue side of the building.

Unfortunately, the cancellation stands.
