Former Bagel Bakery Location Remains Vacant

The location at 500 Newbridge Road has been empty for about six months.

Located between a thrift shop and a nail salon, the former Bagel Bakery at 500 Newbridge Road has remained vacant for about six months.

Craig Buckvar, owner of , said that he is not surprised.

"I have been here for three years and it's been open for only a month total between four owners," he said. "It never stays open."

The small storefront is surrounded by a pizzeria, a Portuguese restaurant,  beauty shops, a laundromat and a liquor store. Business owners have different ideas of what they would want to see open at the location, but they all agree that any business would be beneficial to the area.

"I want to see a mom and pop operation that cares for the community open," Peter Shah, owner of said.

Buckvar said that he would love to see another restaurant open.

"You can never go wrong with food," he said. "More choices would be great."

Shelly, one of the owners of said that there is one type of business that she would love to see open.

"A nice little coffee shop would be great," she said. "One that opens early."

I agree, Sidewalk area, Parking area need facelift. The Business owners in the area deserve better here on this side of East Meadow, particularly where these shops are located. Shops probably would have better business, if surrounding are were improved. East Meadow Avenue has received much beautification and uplifts, this area of town seems neglected. East Meadow Avenue has benches, clock tower, inlaid masonry throughout a large strip of the Avenue, - Newbridge Road shopping area has been passed over. It needs more attention, businesses would probably grow as a result.

East Meadow Avenue has more "main street, downtown" feel than Newbridge Road, and so it got the facelift. Newbridge Road is basically a quick north-south route from Hempstead Tpke to Sunrise Highway. Why does anyone need to shop on Newbridge Road? It's fairly easy to get in yer car and go to Hempstead Tpke, N. Jerusalem Rd, or Jerusalem Ave for shopping.

How about a tropical smoothie cafe? An earl of Sandwich would be AWESOME. probably too small though.
det2659 September 07, 2012 at 04:21 PM
Got to make it look good for the mosque on EM Ave..except for the unsafe dirt filled property next to it.
Jeanette Lowe Hafke September 07, 2012 at 04:27 PM
good question...
Frank T September 07, 2012 at 04:44 PM
Ask the East Meadow Chamber of Commerce. East Meadow Avenue stores are not doing well either and most of the storefronts are not maintained. Most landlords and tenants do not clean litter in front of their own shops. The auto shop on EM Ave and Prospect is disgusting.
det2659 September 07, 2012 at 05:47 PM
I usually ask what politician lives or travels along EM Avenue, or is the TOH pandering to special interest group(s) somewhere along the avenue?
Walter Skinner September 07, 2012 at 08:04 PM
If the properties need a facelift how about asking the landlords, they are the ones collecting rent every month. If they fixed up their property then mabey a small business would want to move in.

While waiting for the T.O.Halt..stead to decide on Sonic, Checkers has been putting out some good coupons lately and it's pretty close to the Sonic menu. Two double burgers for $3 and a 69 cent shake works for me...

East Meadow???.......you mean East Ghetto!!
Blaise Datsun September 08, 2012 at 04:22 PM
I'd like to see more black owned businesses on Newbridge road. All the white owned businesses there go out of business and while they're open they are always dirty. I think some black pride could really tighten the area up.
paul September 08, 2012 at 04:44 PM
To Blaise Datsun: You have just made a racist remark and you know it......... Why would you even do that.....????? Ahhh, I know: Another one sided perspective. If someone said it the other way around you would be calling J and M or someone similar. You know darn well what I am talking about... And, please do not tell me anything.... I know all about how YOU operate. You are a "Race-Baiter" Go ahead make my day tell me I am wrong......
Blaise Datsun September 08, 2012 at 05:08 PM
It's not a remark, it's an opinion. And if there is any evidence that disproves that the businesses there are white owned, the area is dirty and one after another closes down then please set me straight. Otherwise, stop being defensive and go sweep the sidewalk.
paul September 08, 2012 at 05:25 PM

The issue with the shopping areas on Newbridge Road is the need of improved Sidewalks, Parking spaces. From what I can see the shop owners do a satisfactory job of keeping the area neat. The Parking lot, Free-standing sign, and broken sidewalks along Newbridge Road need repair. Some of these problems do NOT involve Landlords, shopkeepers. Furthermore, race has no place in the comments above.
Frank T September 08, 2012 at 06:01 PM
Paul, don't waste your time responding to ignorant people.
Blaise Datsun September 08, 2012 at 07:20 PM
Im not saying anything. I'm just saying maybe it would be nicer.
paul September 08, 2012 at 09:29 PM
Thank you Frank T.... Ahhh that feels better.... ;o)
paul September 08, 2012 at 09:59 PM
To Blaise Datsun: We know you did not say anything that made any sense just total nonsense... Your life must be filled with nonsense. Believe you me I know.. (I know exactly what I just typed) What exactly did you mean by a color of a business? Why on earth would that even make a darn bit of difference? Go ahead Blaise Datsun, make my day, tell me all about the nonsense of what the color of a person has to do with a business operation and how much better it will be....... Go ahead MAKE MY DAY....... You are a "Race-Baiter" plain and simple.....
Blaise Datsun September 08, 2012 at 10:45 PM
I'm not race baiting for goidness' sake. There are just lots of grants and help for minority people who want to start a business. The extra money could be used to make the place more attractive. Why is the race of a business owner important? It brings diversity to the community and maybe you don't see the value in that but that doesn't mean theres no value in it. Stop being so defensive. Pick up the burger king bags on the curb and then rest in the shade. Please.
paul September 08, 2012 at 10:57 PM
To Blaise Datsun: Oh, really.... You stated: "I'd like to see more black owned businesses on Newbridge road. All the white owned businesses there go out of business and while they're open they are always dirty. I think some black pride could really tighten the area up." That most certainly is a racist comment. Anytime you refer to a separation of people the way you did is certainly a circumstance of being a racist.... PERIOD....... You are lurking waiting for the right thing to be said the wrong way..... Then you will have your jolly's of saying someone is prejudice.... Guess what Blaise, I know your thinking and it is unfortunate.....
David September 09, 2012 at 05:23 AM
I never thought I'd be saying this but Paul, you have hit the nail on the head with this one. That was one of the most racist remarks I have ever read here on the Patch. People like to shop in the neighborhood they live in. It should make no difference who owns the business. If it's run properly and have a product that people like, they will patronize it regardless of the color of the owner's skin. At least I'd like to think they will. This is 2012, after all, and East Meadow is not the deep south.
David September 09, 2012 at 05:26 AM
To Frank T, plenty of us who comment on the Patch have wasted our time responding to Paul's ignorant remarks in the past but this time he is totally right.
paul September 09, 2012 at 12:10 PM
To David: My comments are never ignorant. Educational and thought provoking maybe, but never ignorant.... ;o)
paul September 09, 2012 at 12:18 PM
To David: Thank you for your very kind words. The comments made by the person calling themselves "BLAISE DATSUN" should be ashamed of themselves. But, if I really hit the nail on the head they want the right thing said and then it will be interpreted the wrong way... How often does this happen......????? Very often...... Blaise Datsun wants to spew venom as often as possible. As I said before to Blaise: "MAKE MY DAY" and tell me how wrong I am. Better yet tell me how right I am...... You know it and you show it..... And one more thing. You words are disgusting......

check out panda garden, the sushi place next to it, the nail place next to that, the laundry mat... most of that strip is NOT WHITE.. JUST SAYING
Bill Alderman September 09, 2012 at 05:23 PM
Wow! I can't belive that this turned simple into this type of discussion. But I too have to agree with Paul. It is not Ownership diversity that is going to help our community, but business diversity. And having someone suggest that a Black owned Waffle House is more viable, cleaner and nicer a Jewish owned deli, an Italian owed Pizzeria, a Latino owned Liquor store, an Asian owned Chinese take out , etc, etc is just plain wrong on many levels, that maybe THIS insightful opinion should have been kept untyped. What we need is diversified businesses.... A skateboard store, A old fashioned sit down Chinese restaurant or Mongolian Grill, a Curves , and more,in my humble opinion.. and not look at the color of the skin of the ownership or their religious, political, or sexual preferences. In East Meadow, we should and are be open to welcoming all that have sufficient capital, a sound business plan and diverisify our community, without causing additional issues.
det2659 September 09, 2012 at 05:32 PM
White, black, yellow or Martian. If you are a slob then your business will reflect that I don't expect the town to clean up your mess, but I do expect them to cite those that do not. The opportunity to open a business likewise should not depend on race or religion. If we all are taxpayers then we are one color.........green!
