Former 25 Food Mart Remains Vacant

The location at the intersection of East Meadow Avenue and Hempstead Turnpike has been closed for about a year.

Located between and an insurance company in the process of opening, the former 25 Food Mart, located at the intersection of East Meadow Avenue and Hempstead Turnpike, has remained vacant for about a year.

Daniel Nehrebeck, manager of Zorn's, said that he has no idea what should open in the large property.

"I was thinking a gas station but there are so many in this area," he said. "It was a 24-hour market and if that did not make it, I don't know what will."

According to Nehrebeck, a Sleepy's was in the property a few years before the convenience store opened.

Tim Chant, manager of the nearby , said that the building is a hard one to fill.

"It's a lot of square feet with a lot of parking and you need someone who can pay that kind of rent," he said. "Sleepy's was there for a while before it moved, that is a tough place to occupy."

Chant said that one of the reasons the 25 Food Mart closed was because it had too much competition.

"There were too many places that could do what they did better," he said. "If you wanted things like deodorant you go to and if you wanted a cup of coffee you went to the "
