Dr. Munchies Making A Name For Itself in East Meadow

Chamber of Commerce to hold ribbon cutting at new restaurant Sept. 17.

Who knew going to the doctor could be so much fun?

For husband and wife Jay and Ivy Minsky of East Meadow, who opened Dr. Munchies on Newbridge Road in May, it's the feel-good food that keeps people coming back for more.

"Our wings have been a tremendous hit. The sauces are all made in house from scratch. Our burgers do well too, they are hand rolled," said Jay, who grew up in East Meadow and decided to remain here to raise a family. "We also have an Asian steak salad that once our customers order they are hooked."

Soups will be added to the menu on a daily basis once the weather gets cooler, "Meatloaf Mondays" have become popular and the Minskys plan on introducing "Thanksgiving Thursdays" in the coming weeks.

"Thanksgiving is something we have always enjoyed as a family and Ivy has some really killer Thanksgiving dishes that are always a hit," Jay said. "We have always said that if we can make Dr. Munchies happen we would have to do Thanksgiving Thursdays."

The Minskys have lived in their East Meadow home since 1998 and have two children, a daughter in seventh grade at Woodland Middle School and a son in fifth grade at Parkway Elementary school, where Ivy serves as PTA president.

Dr. Munchies, which also offers take out and delivery, is open Monday-Thursday, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Friday-Saturday, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. and is closed on Sundays. Catering services are coming. "We are putting that menu together now," Jay told Patch.

The new restaurant has a big following on Facebook since opening in May with more than 500 page likes. Specials are posted to the page daily.

Thursday's specials include a sausage and pepper hero ($6.50) and a meatball hero ($6.50); and for dinner, a slow smoked pulled chicken platter topped with BBQ or Chipotle sauce served with homemade coleslaw and fries and veggie ($12); slow smoked pulled chicken on a roll topped with BBQ or Chipotle sauce served with coleslaw and fries ($9) and a slow smoked pulled chicken quesadilla topped with BBQ or Chipotle sauce, pepper jack and grilled peppers and onions served with fries ($7.50).

Though Jay admits business has been tough, especially during the summer months, the Minskys continue to give back to the community in any way they can. They recently held a fundraiser for Temple Emanu-El of East Meadow and next summer hope to hold "MunchiePalooza" to benefit the MS Society.

"Moving forward as the business grows we are open to any organization that would like us to participate in a fundraiser," Jay said.

The East Meadow Chamber of Commerce will host a ribbon cutting at Dr. Munchies, located at 355 Newbridge Road, on Tuesday, Sept. 17, at 1 p.m. Dr. Munchies can be reached at 409-5848.
