David Fagan Named Chairman of NUMC Pediatrics

Dr. Fagan previously served as residency program director for the department of pediatrics at NUMC

Arthur A. Gianelli, President and CEO of the NuHealth System, announced that David Fagan, MD, has assumed the responsibilities of acting chairman of the department of pediatrics at the .

Previously, Dr. Fagan served as residency program director for the department of pediatrics at NUMC, overseeing the ACGME approved residency program comprised of ten categorical pediatric positions in each year of training, with rotations at the Cohen Children’s Medical Center of the North Shore-LIJ Health System and at the State University of New York Health Sciences Center at Stony Brook, serving to provide the diversity needed for a well-rounded competency based pediatric graduate medical education.

“We are delighted that a physician with Dr. Fagan’s leadership qualities and expertise in the field of pediatrics will be taking over the responsibilities of leading the pediatrics department and overseeing all the specialty divisions within the department of pediatrics, long a training ground for physicians and allied professionals,” Gianelli said. “Dr. Fagan will be an exceptional leader among our team of pediatricians and pediatric specialists, building on our quality of care and patient safety focus.”

The state-of-the-art neonatal intensive care unit and pediatric intensive care unit at NUMC help hundreds of children every year to recover from premature birth, birth defects, trauma, surgery and life-threatening illness. The department also offers new programs in pediatric weight management, lipid disorders, genetics, pediatric endocrinology, fetal echocardiography and a comprehensive autism/child development center.

The department of pediatrics at Nassau University Medical Center serves as a clinical site for medical students from the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine, and medical students from the American University of the Caribbean. Students take their third-year pediatric clerkships, fourth-year sub-internships and electives on the pediatric service. Pediatric residents are actively involved in the teaching of these students.

“Dr. Fagan brings a wealth of knowledge and experience which will be an asset in assuming his new responsibilities, affording him the unique opportunity to lead his department in demonstrating a commitment to a culture of patient safety and elevating the standard of health care for the children of Nassau County," Steven J. Walerstein, MD, FACP, said.

Dr. Fagan obtained his medical degree from SUNY-Stony Brook School of Medicine in 1996 and completed his residency in pediatrics at the Babies and Children’s Hospital of Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center in NYC. He received his board certification in pediatrics in 1999. Prior to joining NUMC in 2010 in his position as residency program director, Dr. Fagan served as associate program director for pediatrics in the department of pediatrics at St. Barnabas Hospital in the Bronx.

“I am delighted to have been appointed as acting chair of the department of pediatrics at NUMC and look forward to leading the dedicated professionals in the department to further our mission of providing quality care to Nassau’s vulnerable pediatric populations,” Dr. Fagan said.

Dr. Fagan resides in Long Beach with his wife Jacqueline and two children, Jack and Meredith.
