Bites Nearby: Diner Fare at the Apollo

Patch explores exciting and delicious restaurants in the "Bites Nearby" column.

You could stand on a corner and look around until a restaurant sign draws you in. But we've got a better idea. Each week, East Meadow Patch picks a great restaurant either in town or nearby that is worth checking out. Here's this week's choice:

: Situated where Merrick Avenue and Bellmore Avenue meet, the Apollo Diner stands tall with its neat façade and ample space for customer parking. Inside, guests will find a clean, welcoming and warm environment – just what one expects from a neighborhood diner. A wonderful place to grab a bite or stay for a long meal when you are in the mood for a menu filled with many choices.

A light and airy interior is enhanced by mirrors, which gives the feeling that the space is fairly large. Booths and tables are available, with the booths providing some privacy for small to medium sized parties. Take a seat at one of the spots facing the road and check out the jukeboxes that offer a variety of classic and nostalgic music. A separate room off of the side allows for some larger parties and a bar area is also open for seating.

Breakfast offers all of the trimmings, from eggs, omelets and cereal to pancakes and waffles. The pancakes are worth the calories and portions are always generous. Indulge in some of the waffles, which are drizzled with delectable syrup and butter, and top them off with yogurt, ice cream and more. For a slightly more healthy choice, the omelets include broccoli, spinach, peppers and mushrooms, among other options.

The menu expands several pages for lunch and dinner – making sure that all customers leave with a satisfied appetite. There is always something to suit all tastes, ranging from grilled cheese and chicken wraps to a London broil and filet mignon. Seafood covers all of the basics and the roasted entrees are always cooked to perfection. Kids can order off of the Snow White themed children’s menu where each dish is named for a different character – something that will definitely get them to clean off the plate!

Many patrons quickly spot the dessert case as soon as they enter the Apollo and many are definitely worth trying out. The cheesecake is always a sure bet, as is the pound cake. If you are looking for something a little more sweet, check out the baklava. Ice creams and frozen yogurts come with a selection of toppings, but all of the desserts will top off that tasty meal just right.

With quick service and attentive servers, the Apollo is a place to relax, eat and indulge in some truly well done diner food. The menu literally has something for everyone, so the entire group will finish off their food gratified and ready to return to this neighborhood favorite spot again and again.
