A Two-Sided Coin of An Investment

There is never a dull moment when it comes to Nassau County politics. I just wish we could have one whole weekend of it without all this heat.

How l long is a jiffy? As in,"Sir, you will have all the pertinent information you need to make an informed decision about that in a jiffy.”

Whichever way you choose to vote on Aug. 1 (and I am not the type of person to yell at you to vote yes or no, like others who type their opinion in local papers and blogs), for many this will be one tough decision based on very little facts and contradictory remarks.

One side says that if the Islanders leave that will cause economic disaster for local residents. While the other side says, remember the original home of the N.Y. Nets pro basketball team was the Long Island Arena, before Nassau Coliseum. It is now the site of the Commack Target department store and one of the largest, most profitable in their chain.

One side says that, with a new Coliseum and the improvements of an acoustic curtain and state of the art woofers and tweeters (whatever happen to the audio meower who would want cats not to be represented too), we will get more concerts like the Black Eyed Peas and Live Nation concerts like Janet Jackson and Def Jam.

Meanwhile, the other side says that the Black Eyed Peas just announced that they will not be performing together for years and years together, like Simon and Garfunkel only amicably. And who wants to see rappers with Tea or just the letter T something in their name, but the non-tax-paying kids from all over the rest of New York.

Many of these Hub naysayers are the same seniors who want classical music, operas, ballets and symphonies, and whine that parking at the Tillis Center stinks more than a wedge of 16-month-old, unrefrigerated Limburger cheese.

Now that type of music too would be nice to see at the new indoor arena. Because not everybody is a fan of Disney on Ice, Rihanna or dancing stallions anyway.

One side will tell you that the Islanders will keep their schedule of 42 home games and create extra hockey games like exhibitions and scrimmages and now be able to possibly host the NHL All-star Game as well have more than the 116 events last year. Because of the new arena we could get more WWE Wrestling events and new Indoor Lacrosse and sports that have never been seen in an arena in Nassau County, like Pro Roller Derby, Junior Olympics, MMA/UFC (Mixed Martial Arts), Snowcross (motorcross motorcycle racing on snow) and many more.

The other side says that SMG chased sports people away with huge rental fees like the NLL Saints and NLL Titans (lacrosse), Dragons (indoor football), Majesty (indoor lingerie football- MY kind of sport if there ever was one) and others. But, the ticket prices would again go up.

And that many more events than 225 would be a scheduling nightmare and you would invite superior sports stupidity like the fans that paid a lot to attend the 2002 MLB All-star game in Milwaukee, which believe it or not, ended in a tie...all because the score was tied at 7-7 in the 11th inning and the teams ran out of pitchers and the TV crews wanted to go home, Commissioner Bud "Show me the money" Selig called the game a draw. Not the first time there was a tie (the other time was because of rain) but the first time because of shoddy planning. Much like the Eisenhower Park Aquatic Center.

Whether you have faith in our duly elected officials like I do, or think you will get scammed like a NYC Three Card Monty game is up to you. Whether you think Billionaire Chucky Wang who is charging to meet with, will raise ticket prices at the new Coliseum, like the Wilpons at Citifield or not. Whether you think a Cracker Barrel or Dairy Queen Restaurant will come and bring new jobs or not is all about faith. Faith in believing in some higher power that does the right thing in guiding our future when everything physical seems bleakest. So for me, while I would like more information I have to settle now for what I got and my faith to make this momentous decision. I think that I will vote to invest in my county with a separate $58 a year for the next 30 years  line item on my County bill.

Much like I invest weekly with a separate salary deduction for the next 30 years, a line item on my paycheck, that is my 401K investment. I personally rationalize that there is almost no difference and not a tax increase (If it waddles like an investment, and quacks like an investment, it’s an investment!)

I hope that I have shed some light on these fireworks for you.
