Top opinion pieces from Patch users this week.

Every day on Patch, locals share their opinions on a variety of subjects.

Here are some of the most interesting blogs from the past week:

  • Bully Protection: Ending The Victim Mentality: If you haven’t heard, October is National Bullying Prevention Month. This month, communities and schools participate in programs and events to raise awareness and provide education that will prevent bullying.
  • Whatever Happened to Making Your Own Costume?: I went to a party goods store the other day with my granddaughter, to buy her a Halloween costume. I was delighted. I remember costumes in cardboard boxes, with see through cellophane windows on top.
  • Massapequa Girls Varsity Volleyball Clinches Varsity Title: Massapequa Varsity girls (11-0) defeated Baldwin to clinch the top spot in the AA-1 Conference.  The varsity squad, led by seniors Katie Vedilago (34 assists) and Justine Abbate (11 kills), won the contest by a score of 3-0 (25-11, 25-16, 25-15). Freshman Jamie Smith added 12 kills.
  • Yogini?: I go to two yoga classes each week. One class inhabits change; the routines, postures, and on occasion even the teachers. The other is steadfast; familiar, regular, consistent. Blue water rafting versus canoeing down a glass surfaced lake.
  • 5 Essential Vegan Soups for Fall/Winter: As the cooler weather approaches, my family starts to crave hot hearty soups, and they have their favorites. I believe that there are five essential vegan soup recipes which everyone needs to help them get through the colder months of the year. Of course, these recipes are great for any time of the year too!
  • The Jones Beach Marker: We’ve arrived at the end of our blogging path, following the markers erected by the Historical Society of the Massapequas along Merrick Road, north through Massapequa Park, west to North Massapequa and then back along the north side of the Long Island Railroad tracks.
  • Electioneering in Levittown, 1962: The late George Carlin, probably the closest thing this generation will ever have to possessing its own Swift or Voltaire, once satirized the advertisement industry with his verbal machine gun; a relentless fusillade of clichés and aphorisms concerning "knowledgeable, courteous, efficient, well-trained, friendly, professional salesmen" who, whilst "servicing the account", could provide the consumer with a "deluxe, economy-sized, user-friendly, state-of-the-art, moderately priced, modular, environmentally responsible.....".
  • Race is An Integral Part of This Nation: Race is an integral part of our national etiquette. The quest for a separate equality permeates every discussion. Yet we have never really confronted the issue.  Most exchanges seem cloaked in polite conversation, the kind reserved for backyard barbecues and dinner parties.
