'Test of What We Could Endure': How East Meadow Coped with Sandy Power Outages

Share your own Sandy story on our open blog.

More than 80 percent of LIPA customers lost power in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy and many remained in the dark for several days, with a few waiting well more than a week for power to be restored.

On the one year anniversary of Sandy, we asked readers on our Facebook page how long they were without power and how they coped. Here's a few of the responses:

Karla Jean: I was without power for five days. I stayed by my dad in Queens.

Phyllis Ceravolo Katz: Four days but we had a generator and had family and friends for two weeks.

Mary Carter: We were without power 14 days. Did laundry at my mom's and ate a lot of Chinese food from the takeout around the block.

Kristina Kelly Hollywood: Same as Karla. Five days and my girls and I stayed with my folks in Floral Park, Queens. My hubby was in Indonesia and I was the one "roughing" it.

Muhammad Ari: 14 days!

Eileen Frize Napolitano: 14 days with out power. Relied on good neighbors with power. Played a lot of games with kids. In truth. It was a test of how we could endure as a family. Together.

Maria Parrella Telson: I was VERY lucky.. only one and a half days (North Wantagh), but my Mom in Oceanside got displaced for 11 months and stayed with us.

Kristin Pappas: 14 days, but with the generator we had purchased the year before. Had my daughter and her family, who were without electricity and who live in Westbury. My sister in law, and her husband, would come over from Manhasset to take hot showers and hang out. We were very fortunate (thank you, God!) there was no damage to our home. 14 trees were uprooted on our street.
