Tell Us Where The Potholes Are in East Meadow

Although winter is far from over, this freeze/thaw/freeze cycle of winter weather could begin wreaking havoc on local roads. And you know what that means for drivers - potholes.

The Town of Hempstead's Highway Department, which maintains more than 1,200 miles of roadway, along with 143 town parking fields, is responsible for pothole repairs. Call the department directly at 489-5000, ext. 3471 or via the helpline form and be specific as possible - exact street address and the nearest cross street.

During the winter, the Highway Department fills potholes with temporary cold patch until permanent repairs can be made the following spring.

According to Marc Herbst, executive director of the Long Island Contractors’ Association, "ruinous thaw and freeze allows for a constant runoff of water into the smallest cracks in the street only to have it expand when the temperature drops below freezing."

“It is Mother Nature’s version of a jack hammer and we have many weeks to go before this cycle comes to an end,” he said.
