PSEG Offers Homeowners Tips for Dealing with Power Outages

Be prepared for possible power outages as a winter storm hits Long Island on Tuesday.

As a winter storm is set to blast Long Island on Tuesday, new utility company PSEG Long Island is offering tips on what to do if electricity goes out.

The utility company asks residents if they lose power to check their neighborhood first. If your home is the only one without power, check your fuse box for tripped circuit breakers or blown fuses first.

PSEG has posted a list of storm preparation recommendations on the utility company's website to help homeowners cope with possible power outages.

They advise residents to:

  • Keep a battery-powered radio or TV handy
  • Have extra batteries and flashlights ready for each family member
  • Have a supply of canned food with a manual can opener
  • If you have an electric water pump, keep spare containers of water for cooking and washing
  • Keep a non-electronic phone in your home as phone lines often remain operational during storms
  • If you decide to use a generator, have it installed by a licensed electrician
  • Never operate a generator inside your garage or home
  • If a power outage occurs, unplug appliances and sensitive electronics equipment to prevent damage from a momentary power spike when power is restored
  • Make arrangements for the elderly and others with special needs. Individuals who rely on electricity to operate life-sustaining electronic equipment, such as a respirator or dialysis machine, should pre-register with PSEG Long Island to receive priority attention in the event of an outage. To request the service, call PSEG Long Island at 1-800-490-0025.
If a power outage does occur during the storm, there are several ways to report it to PSEG.
