UPDATE: Thousands Without Power in Wantagh-Seaford From Hurricane Sandy

Strong winds knock out power to thousands of LIPA costumers in Wantagh-Seaford area.

As Hurricane Sandy started striking the Long Island region Monday night, hundreds of Wantagh and Seaford residents found themselves without power.

According to the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) storm center website, there were 3,445 outages in Wantagh and 3,048 in North Wantagh as of 9:03 p.m. LIPA also reported 922 power outages in Seaford. In total, 618,427 LIPA customers were without power by mid Monday afternoon including 142,854 in the Town of Hempstead.

When Hurricane-turned Tropical Storm Irene struck Long Island last year, nearly 10,000 LIPA outages were reported in the Wantagh-Seaford area.

@ jo Zimny- Cell service is spotty at BEST in all Wantagh/Seaford locations. Where in Wantagh are they located? - IF south of Merrick Road Heavey flooding and downed trees and no power- the closer to the water the worse the flood damage. Wantagh Woods area south of Jerusalem- NO power to many with many trees down but no water damage- so far have not heard of any injuries. Hang in there thye are probably fine just no power and no cell service -

Us too. My brother-in-law lives there, and we have not been able to reach him. The first two days were expected, but we're starting to get a little concerned.

Pending Approval NYC Teach 7:07 pm on Friday, November 2, 2012 I'd like to start collecting clothing, blankets and other necessities for the Seaford Community. I will drop everything off at the Red Cross set up at the park so we are all not using our gas. Does this sound like a good idea. maybe the Seaford FireDepartment could let us use their space to organize? Anyone know any firmen that could help us out? Let me know ASAP. Between Facebook and The Patch we could get some thing up and running by tomorrow afternoon!

Still off on Ruth Court on 11/7/2012. We lose power here if someone sneezes the wrong way. Is there nothing we can do to make LIPA maintain their connections properly so this doesn't happen? I can't count the number of times I've come home to find the clocks blinking, indicating that the power was out again.
