Update: Parents Report Suspicious Maroon Van in East Meadow

Police said that they were notified about the matter and are patrolling the streets.

Updated: Oct. 24 at 1 p.m.

Nassau County Police said that they have been notified of a suspicious maroon van that has been driving around East Meadow this week.

Authorities said that a report was filed on Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. stating that the vehicle was seen on Park Avenue and East Meadow Avenue.

Police said that they are patrolling the streets for the van.

Residents said that the van was seen near McVey Elementary School around 7:30 a.m. on Wednesday. The driver was said to be wearing a ski mask and the vehicle's back windows were covered.

In emails and via Facebook, parents have reported that a middle school student saw the van fitting the description on Tuesday while he was waiting for the bus. He said that the driver was slowly heading toward McVey Elementary School and that the back windows were covered with paper.

Residents said that the driver was also seen trying to talk to a 4 or 5-year-old girl that was walking in front of her mother. The mother yelled at her daughter to run back to her and the driver took off.

Keep a look out.. its Halloween time.. somehow it seems like the CREEPS come out early.. best thing is look for a license plate and anything specific that can eliminate the van from other general vans.. i.e. DENT ON FRONT.. Crack in windshield.. a Personalized NYS plate .. NO Hubcaps.. these minute details seperate one Maroon van from the next .. Be safe!!

I will state a point that I have said before - this is why it is not good enough for you to be able to "see" your kid when they're walking in front of you. You have to be able to reach them.
Lucianna October 25, 2012 at 12:37 am
Good point, Jenn, my young kids were always in arms length of me. However let's not fault the 4 yr olds mom, there were plenty of times when my fast vivacious son would run ahead of me when my sleeping baby girl was in the stroller. I think we as parents need to start a neighborhood watch!!! The taxes in Nassau are ridiculous, yet cops can't be hired to patrol (drive/walk) around and patrol the schools to protect our most precious commodities; OUR CHILDREN....so can we use the PTA bake sales, fundraisers, clothing drives, dance/rec night money, chocolate sales etc. to hire some security guards to protect our kids or do we need another 30,000 playground for 1st graders only at Barnum Woods??? Seriously where are our priorities??? I would much rather sacrafice a smart board for a white board and a patrol car!!!
Jenn October 25, 2012 at 12:44 am
Oh I definitely meant no harm/disrespect or finger-pointing towards the mom - I know first hand how quickly a child can get away from you. I just meant as rule to keep them close.

How about the school district sending out a message to the community? Just a thought!

I'm all for vigilance when it comes to our children but this Maroon Van ski mask person has taken on a life of it's own. This has been on the Internet for almost a week and it was only a matter of time before someone saw something similar and reported it to PDCN.
When this exploded on Monday law enforcement sources knew nothing about it, I can't help but think that this has taken on a life of it's own. When I picked up my child yesterday the first thing I heard about was the maroon van. Again I agree we should be vigilant but I think that the specifics of this story are a bit out there and it is playing on parents emotions especially on light of the recent events in South Jersey. Teaching our children good common sense about interacting with the world around them is a good idea, sharing specific stories and spreading rumor and urban myth is not a good idea.

hi jon, i disagree, i think its an excellent idea to spread the word. what's the harm? people spread rumors about every stupid little thing, this at least is potentially helpful. even if this is blown out of proportion, or even if it is completely false, whats the harm? at the very least, people are keeping their kids a little closer, having conversations that we should all be having regularly with our kids, and keeping an extra eye out in our neighborhood.

To Jon L:
Great points.. To Deb: The point is that the rumor mill is just that a rumor and gets distorted as the story expands and does take on a life of its own....

I was not aware of this story until now. My daughter came over at 7:30 tonight, thursday, and was very upset because a van, don't know what color, blocked her in as she was exiting her car at Walgreens on N. Jerusulem Ave. and some dirtbag approached her and asked her for money to buy gas. She got so scared that she locked herself in her car and the punk jumped back in the van and left. I will get more details and post them when I see her friday.

Robert..sorry that happened to your daughter.. yeah any details would help... its sad that this happens alot out here..

I live on Maple Ave. in East Meadow, about a half of a mile west of McVey. I was doing some work outside the house the other day when a maroon van drove slowly down my block, a bit too close too the sidewalk, with a gauy looking out the drivers side window. The pace of the van and the fact that it was close to the sidewalk, made it seem like the driver was just slowly scouting around for something. It seemed creepy to me. I have two young kids and it regestered as potential trouble. When I saw this story it just clicked. Mike

The Schools need to start educating the children about predators in and out of the homes. This subject is not enforced and it is a big issue in society.
paul October 26, 2012 at 12:28 pm
Now everyone is paranoid.
Perhaps the van was looking for an address, perhaps they were metal scrapers looking for old appliances left at the curb, perhaps they were can collectors looking for recyclables. All the above I mentioned are possibilities in case you did not know. Now every time a van drives down your block it is scary. It is OK to be concerned but overly cautious it what makes things bad... You might as well live under a rock or in a cave...

I have two kids... The van creeped me out. I couldn't care less if I'm mistaken. No such thing as "OVERLY CAUTIOUS".
paul October 26, 2012 at 01:06 pm
The van creeped you out????
Really... Then call the police and let them know that your observation creeped you out... That is the only way they will know about the creepy things that you see....
Jeanette October 26, 2012 at 02:39 pm
With all the reports of sightings of the van all over FB I am surprised the EM PATCH didn't report on this sooner. Old news Patch : ( A lot of us parents were on watch from day one.
paul October 27, 2012 at 02:15 am
Don't worry about what gets posted on the Patch or Facebook etc.
You should be more concerned on who is reporting what to the police. Do not assume because one person reported it that it was enough. It is not.... You all need to report your version of what you have seen....

I saw the same guy...and actually gave him some change....a whole story about his sister in St Joe's hospital, she cracked up his car and who knows the rest of the story....i find it easier to hand over some silver than coming up with an excuse. Plus who knows whats true these days and I've been forgetful and careless at times that strangers helped me out.
If this may actually be a person of interest, I'm pretty sure that the Walgreen's video cams might have caught something as it was right in front t of the entrance in their parking lot by the red box video thing. but now this is weird and it can easily get blown out of proportion. I mean the guy stopped me too and asked for $. I'm a middle aged chubby white guy, so again who is to say what about who this guy was. I dont recall the vans color as we speak, but I do recall doing something extra, I just cant recall at this moment. I may have jotted something down or something

Hi Billy..Thanks for verifing the story. There are some critics on the Patch who like to discredit everything that they read. I know that this is going to sound like sensationalizing, but I spoke to my daughter today and she said that the van was indeed maroon. She is still shaken up over it and I wish that I could get my hands around his neck for causing her to be in fear now. We took a ride around the area tonight but of course there was no sign of the van.
robert October 27, 2012 at 04:50 am
Thanks for your concern Brent. My daughter is very petite and this clown really scared her. I added some more details above and also read Billy's experience..

What's to look into? Neil Koenig was the owner. He's good friends with my cousin. My cousin toldRead More me "he couldn't make a go of it." The last time I was there was in December. The food was just ok and the service was horrible. Not one course was correct and we didn't even change anything from the menu description. Note to the waitress, the appetizer is NOT supposed to come for dessert!! And Rich is correct. The name was Buongusto's PieSano's. I hope the new owners (Lia's) stop serving Chocolate Mouse (should be Mousse) as per the sign on the Prospect Avenue side of the building.
