Oct. 18: Police Catch Merrick Pit Bull, PAL President Dies

Five things to keep an eye out for today.

  1. The pit bull that has been eluding police was finally detained in Merrick on Monday in front of Precious Kids. Lieutenant Kevin Smith revealed the details leading up to the dog's capture.
  2. East Meadow PAL President Frank Mazza collapsed during a Division High School football game Saturday. Nassau University Medical Center doctors discovered that Mazza had an aneuryism, and he died Sunday morning.
  3. A Bellmore man died on Saturday after he crashed his car into a tree, New York State Police said. Zachary Avanzato, 23, was driving a 1972 Chevrolet Impala southbound on the Wantagh State Parkway in Wantagh when he drove into the median shoulder for unknown reasons and struck a tree around 6:22 p.m., police said.
