NYSDOT Completes Fence on Hempstead Turnpike

East Meadow residents have said that the fence between Carmen and Franklin avenues can be a safety hazard.

The New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) completed the installation of a fence on Hempstead Turnpike between Carmen and Franklin avenues last week. The placement of the fence is part of NYSDOT's initiative to improve pedestrian safety along the 16-mile turnpike.

During the installation, residents stating that it could be more of a safety hazard, that it could lead to more Nassau University Medical Center employees parking in neighborhoods on the south side of the hospital and that there was no input from the community before the fence was placed.

Jennifer Post, spokesperson for the NYSDOT said that the fence will benefit the community.

"It discourages pedestrians from crossing mid-block, helping to ensure they get across the road safely at intersections, where they are more visible to motorists,"she said.
