NUMC to Start New Program For Low-Income Families

Health Leads will allow doctors to "prescribe" basic resources like food, heat, child care and transportation just like they do medication.

Nassau University Medical Center will start a new program called Health Leads, which will allow doctors to "prescribe" basic resources such as food, heat, child care and transportation to low-income families.

Highly trained students from Hofstra University will serve as advocates who will connect patients to resources like food banks, utility assistance, legal assistance, child care and early intervention programs for children.

The program will be the first of its kind to address the challenges facing families of children with special needs and the first time the program is serving a suburban area, Shelley Lotenberg, the director of public affairs at Nassau University Medical Center said.
