Norma Gonsalves: I Am Angry at LIPA

The county legislator and East Meadow resident said she will do all that she can to get the power of thousands in the community restored.

County Legislator Norma Gonsalves, an East Meadow resident, said she is not
happy with Long Island Power Authority's treatment of thousands of East Meadow customers who remain without power.

She said that she has been constantly trying to reach officials within the company and someone finally got back to her on Thursday.

"I am angry at LIPA," she said. "I have been on municipal conference calls and I have told them that East Meadow has been neglected. I am waiting for more information from them."

Gonsalves, who regained electrical power at her East Meadow home on Sunday, said that she empathizes with the East Meadow community.

"I know what it is like," she said. "Many have elderly parents and children and nothing is being done."

Gonsalves said that for the past several days she has been calling LIPA, as well as traveling around the community.

"I know where the outages are and I don't see any trucks," she said. "To them {LIPA} if the pocket is not big enough they put it on the back burner.  Some of the outages can be fixed as simple as turning on a switch."

She said that she will continue to "hound" LIPA long after there are no outages.

"This was not Hurricane Irene, it was a disaster," she said. "I am not finished."
