Noise Becoming an Issue in East Meadow

According to Legis. Norma Gonsalves (R-East Meadow), all parties and loud noise must end at 11 p.m.

In recent weeks, many East Meadow residents have grown tired of the loud noise from house parties late at night, as was the case with one house party on May 2 at the intersection of Kalda Lane and May Lane.

"Neighbors were outside, and the police finally came and quieted them down," Bill Alderman said at a recent Council of East Meadow Civic Organizations (CEMCO) meeting. "A half hour passed, and they got loud again."

Alderman stressed that many people near that party were fed up. One family had a new baby, and the noise prevented them from getting the "little amount of sleep they could," according to Alderman.

Legis. Norma Gonsalves, R-East Meadow, says that people need to keep it quiet at the same time every day, and that includes people hosting any time of house or block party.

"It's 11 p.m.," Gonsalves said. "That's the law."

For any violations after 11 p.m., people are advised to call the police.

Others at the meeting expressed concerns on school nights with children who go to sleep at 10 p.m. or earlier, and Elizabeth Fries hinted that some common decency may be in order.

"You are supposed to be conscientious to your neighbor," Fries said. "Is that too much to ask?"
