Lemonade Stand Profits to Help Build Rain Garden at Parkway School

East Meadow Girl Scouts will set up shop at A Taste of Home Bakery in N. Bellmore Aug. 31.

East Meadow Girl Scout Troop 1169 will hold a lemonade stand Aug. 31 to raise funds to build a rain garden at Parkway School.

The stand will be set up at A Taste of Home Bakery in N. Bellmore between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

There are six girls in the troop: Shannon Floody, Ryan Skoros, Megan Sohl, Gabriela Cunha, Shannon Pepe and Kelly Trebendis, all age 10 and entering fifth grade at Parkway Elementary School.

Amanda Skoros has been leading the group of girls since kindergarten. "They have always done plenty of community service throughout East Meadow as well as surrounding communities," she said. "This is their first major project."

The East Meadow scouts are building the garden to earn their Bronze Award, the highest honor a Girl Scout Junior (fourth and fifth grades) can achieve.

Proceeds will go towards the purchasing of flowers, plants, soil and other needed items. The troop is hoping to work with a local nursery to purchase the plants and flowers.Skoros said the girls chose to construct a rain garden because they wanted to "give back to the community and at the same time beautify the community."

"They also wanted to leave something at Parkway to say 'thank you' for all their years there," she said. "The girls are hoping EM residents will be able to stop at Parkway and enjoy the beauty and quiet of the rain garden and have it be a place where people can visit and enjoy."
